9 cheap things to do in Heidelberg

Heidelberg packs its best sights into a walkable Neckar-valley core, and most of the free ones are the ones locals actually recommend. Here’s the list, with real 2026 prices for the paid stops.

  1. Tour Heidelberg Castle, the honest way. This is not an intact palace, it’s a red-sandstone ruin, blown up by French troops in 1689 and 1693 during the War of the Palatine Succession, its Renaissance Ottheinrichsbau wing finished off by lightning in 1764. The Schlossticket (11 euros adult, 5.50 euros reduced, verify at schloss-heidelberg.de ) covers the Bergbahn funicular from Kornmarkt, the courtyard, the Great Tun wine barrel (built 1751, holds roughly 219,000 liters), and the German Pharmacy Museum. A guided tour of the interior state rooms adds 6 euros (verify). Budget 2-3 hours.
  2. Cross the Alte Brücke and find the Bridge Monkey. The current stone bridge dates to 1786-88. Its bronze monkey, cast in 1979 by Gernot Rumpf, replaced an original destroyed in the 1689 French destruction; a monkey has marked this spot since at least 1481. Rub the mirror for wealth and the bronze mice for luck, free.
  3. Walk the Philosophenweg. The path climbing the Heiligenberg’s lower slope has been walked by university scholars since around 1788, and it delivers the postcard view: castle, Altstadt roofs, and the Old Bridge together across the river. The core stretch is about 2-2.4 kilometers; extend it into a roughly 9.3-kilometer loop via the Heiligenbergweg and Odenwälderweg trails if you want more of a hike, free either way.
  4. Stand in Marktplatz and step into the Heiliggeistkirche. The market square anchors the Altstadt, with the Rathaus and the late-Gothic Church of the Holy Spirit, once home to part of the Bibliotheca Palatina library, on its edge. Free to visit.
  5. Walk Heidelberg University’s Old Town core. Founded in 1386, it’s Germany’s oldest university. The Studentenkarzer (student prison, used until 1914), covered floor to ceiling in student graffiti, is one of the city’s best small museums; check the HeidelbergCARD’s university combo ticket before paying separately. The Bibliotheca Palatina itself was carried off to the Vatican in 1623, only 847 of its manuscripts were ever returned, in 1816.
  6. Ride the Bergbahn to Königstuhl. Past the castle stop, the funicular’s upper section is a genuinely historic wooden-car ride to the 567.8-meter summit. The Panoramaticket runs 11 euros one-way or 17 euros return, or 7/10 euros for the upper section alone if you skip the castle (verify all at bergbahn-heidelberg.de). Forest paths and valley views at the top are free.
  7. Take a Neckar boat cruise. Weisse Flotte runs short panorama cruises past the castle and Altstadt in around 50 minutes, and a roughly 3-hour round trip upstream to the “four castles” town of Neckarsteinach through the Neckartal-Odenwald Nature Park (verify current prices at weisseflotte.com). Season runs roughly Easter to late October.
  8. Hike the Heiligenberg. Across the river from the castle, the hill layers a Celtic-era settlement, the ruined 9th-century St. Michael’s Monastery, and the Thingstätte, a Nazi-era propaganda amphitheater built in 1935 that’s worth understanding honestly rather than skipping past. Free to walk.
  9. Watch the sunset from the Neckarwiese. The riverside meadow on the north bank is Heidelberg’s free evening spot, picnics, frisbee, and the castle lighting up across the water.

Getting between these sights

The Altstadt is walkable end to end. The Bergbahn’s lower Kornmarkt station gets you to the castle and, on the upper section, Königstuhl; a VRN short-hop tram or bus ticket runs about 2.30 euros (verify at vrn.de) for anything further out.
