Panama City’s nature, from free hikes to rainforest days
Panama City is a rare capital where genuine rainforest sits close enough to reach without an overnight trip, and most of what’s inside the city itself costs nothing.
Free, inside the city
Ancon Hill. A former US-military hill turned public park, with a free 30 to 45 minute climb to the top delivering the best panorama in the city: canal, skyline and forest canopy in one view, plus real odds of spotting toucans or sloths on the way. It’s the single best free thing to do in Panama City.
Metropolitan Natural Park. A pocket of rainforest inside city limits, walkable from downtown, with marked trails through tropical dry forest and a real chance of spotting sloths, agoutis and a wide range of birds without leaving the city proper. Entry is free or a small nominal fee depending on the day.
Cinta Costera. Not rainforest, but the coastal promenade linking Casco Viejo to the modern skyline is a flat, free walk with water on one side and skyline views on the other, good for an easy evening outdoors between heavier days.
Worth a half-day out
Amador Causeway. Built from canal excavation spoil, this waterfront strip has marina views, sea breeze and the Biomuseo grounds, free to walk end to end even if you skip paying to go inside the museum.
Worth a full day
Gamboa and Soberania National Park. The closest genuine rainforest to the city, 45 to 60 minutes out along the canal. The Aerial Tram lifts you above the canopy for $25 to $30, and a Monkey Island boat tour on Gatun Lake, $30 to $40, reliably turns up howler monkeys and sloths along the shoreline. Budget the full day, transport, tram or boat, and lunch, at $60 to $90.

Go early for all of these. Panama City’s heat and humidity build through the morning, and the wildlife, sloths especially, is far more active in the first few hours after sunrise than by midday.
