Athens With Kids: The Real Zoo and More
The city’s real zoo isn’t in the city at all, and knowing that before you plan a day around it saves a wasted trip.
Attica Zoological Park
Located in Spata, roughly 20km east of central Athens near the airport rather than inside the city, this is a genuinely large park: over 2,000 animals across some 350 species. Its dolphins were relocated to Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida in May 2025, so don’t plan a visit around a dolphin show. Attica Zoological Park’s own site has current hours and ticket prices; build in transport time, since it’s a real trip out from the center rather than a quick stop. Public transport out to Spata involves at least one change, so a taxi or a rental car is the more practical option for a family traveling with young kids and stroller gear.
The National Garden
Free, shaded, and centrally located behind the Parliament building, the National Garden has a playground, a duck pond, and a small menagerie of peacocks, ducks and goats, an easy low-effort stop that needs no planning at all. Shaded benches throughout make it a genuine midday retreat during summer, not just a stop between sights.
Hellenic Children’s Museum
In Plaka, this hands-on museum is built around interactive exhibits designed for kids to touch and explore rather than just look at, a good rainy-day or midday-heat option that doesn’t involve much walking at all.
Athens Riviera beaches
Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Alimos are all reachable by tram and genuinely family-friendly, with calm, shallow water in several spots and no extra precautions needed beyond the usual summer sun advice most families already pack for.
Planning around the heat
Athens summers run hot enough that midday outdoor time, especially at the zoo or the beach, is best shifted to morning or late afternoon. Carry water and sun protection regardless of season, and check stroller accessibility in advance for any of the ancient sites if combining this with sightseeing; several have uneven ground or stairs.
