Szentendre, the Easy Half-Day
The HÉV suburban line H5 leaves from Batthyány tér and covers the roughly 40-minute ride to this compact, walkable artists’ town. The Szabó-Szamos Marzipan Museum is still open and worth the stop if sweets are your thing. This is the easiest half-day on the list, doable even with a late start.
The Danube Bend, a Full Day
Szentendre, Visegrád, and Esztergom together make an 8-to-10-hour day, whether by coach tour or a self-arranged train-and-bus route. A direct train from Keleti takes about 1 hour 50 minutes each way. About 1.5 to 2 hours by train from Budapest-Déli, Hungary’s largest lake only makes sense for swimming in summer. Take an early first train to make the most of the day before the return trip eats into the afternoon.
Vienna, the International Hop
Roughly 2 hours 16 minutes to 2 hours 37 minutes by Railjet, Vienna is a genuinely easy international day trip for a different country entirely.

Pay for everything in forint rather than euro, since even where euros are technically accepted, the exchange rate offered runs worse than paying with HUF or a card.
