Surabaya itself has no real hiking
Be honest about this before booking a trip around it: Surabaya is a flat, hot, spread-out port city, and there’s no genuine in-city trail worth the name. The hiking that draws people to this part of East Java happens hours outside the city, at Mount Bromo and Kawah Ijen, and this guide covers those trips rather than pretending Surabaya has trails it doesn’t.

Mount Bromo: an easy hike with a hard wake-up call
The Bromo hike itself is genuinely manageable: roughly 45 minutes on foot from Cemoro Lawang village to the crater rim, across the otherworldly Sea of Sand caldera floor. The hard part is the schedule, a pre-dawn jeep departure to reach Mount Penanjakan (2,770m) for sunrise, which is reachable on foot in about 2 hours or by jeep as part of the standard tour. Bring a warm layer; it’s genuinely cold at altitude even though Surabaya itself never gets close to cool. Check current PVMBG volcano-alert status before booking, since Bromo has erupted as recently as December 2023.
Kawah Ijen: a harder hike, and a real hazard
Ijen’s crater-rim hike runs about 2 hours up, with a further 45-minute descent for those viewing the blue fire up close. This is a harder and more serious hike than Bromo’s, done in the dark for the sulfuric flames, and the crater vents genuine toxic gas: a gas mask is standard advice, not an optional extra. Roughly 200 sulfur miners work the crater by hand, carrying 75-90kg loads up a steep slope, a stark reminder that this is a working site as well as a hiking destination.
Malang and Batu, a cooler alternative
If a full volcano day doesn’t fit, Malang and its satellite town Batu, roughly 2-2.5 hours from Surabaya, sit at 440-667m elevation and offer a genuinely cooler climate with easy walking among Dutch colonial architecture rather than a demanding hike. It’s a lower-intensity way to get out of Surabaya’s heat without the pre-dawn logistics of Bromo or Ijen.
Booking and timing
Neither Bromo nor Ijen has direct public transport from Surabaya, so book an organized jeep tour or a private driver rather than trying to arrange it independently. Book a Bromo sunrise hike or a combined Bromo-Ijen tour a few days ahead in dry season (June-September), when demand and clear skies both peak.
