Surabaya itself is a gritty working port city, not a resort, and most travelers really come through it to reach two volcanoes: Mount Bromo and Kawah Ijen. Both cost real money and real planning, since neither has direct public transport from the city, but both are cheaper and more doable on a budget than their reputation suggests. Below is what each trip actually costs, how to get there, and a couple of closer, cheaper options if a full volcano day doesn’t fit your schedule. Mount Bromo: the marquee trip
Mount Bromo, an active volcano at 2,329m inside Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, is the trip almost everyone does. A shared jeep tour picks you up in the middle of the night, drives to the Penanjakan viewpoint for sunrise over the Sea of Sand, then down to the crater itself for a roughly 45-minute walk to the rim. Check the current PVMBG volcano-alert status before booking, since Bromo has erupted as recently as December 2023. Book a Bromo sunrise jeep tour rather than trying to arrange the jeep and driver separately; it is not a trip worth improvising on the ground.
Kawah Ijen: farther, and worth it
Kawah Ijen sits on the Banyuwangi border, much farther from Surabaya than Bromo, and pairs a turquoise acid crater lake with “blue fire,” sulfuric gas that ignites in the dark. The hike to the crater rim takes about 2 hours, with a further descent for those viewing the flames up close. The crater vents genuine toxic sulfur gas, so carry a gas mask on the pre-dawn hike; most tour operators can rent one. Because of the distance, this usually means an overnight near Banyuwangi rather than a same-day round trip from Surabaya, and many visitors combine it with Bromo as a two- or three-day circuit. Closer, cheaper options
If a full volcano day doesn’t fit, Madura island is free to reach across the 5.4km Suramadu Bridge, tolls abolished in 2018, and is known for Karapan Sapi bull racing (roughly July-October) and its own satay style. Trowulan, the ruined capital of the Majapahit Empire, is a shorter trip inland with temple remains and a museum for a few thousand rupiah entry (verify current hours and fee). Malang and its cooler satellite town Batu, roughly 2-2.5 hours away, offer Dutch colonial architecture and a break from Surabaya’s heat, though transport there is easiest with a private driver or an organized tour rather than public transport. None of these need the advance planning a Bromo or Ijen trip does, so they slot in well on a shorter visit or as a backup if volcano conditions turn.
Is a private driver worth it over a group tour?
For Bromo, a shared jeep tour is usually the cheaper and simpler option since jeeps are already required just to reach the viewpoints. For Ijen, a private driver or overnight tour package tends to be worth the extra cost given the distance and the overnight logistics involved. Either way, book ahead in dry season (June-September), when clear skies make the sunrise views worth the early wake-up and slots fill fastest.
