Venice travel tips that actually save money
Venice has a reputation for being expensive, and it can be, but most of the cost is avoidable once you know where the traps are. These are the practical tips that keep the trip cheap without cutting the good parts, plus the etiquette that keeps you out of trouble.
Get the transport maths right
The city is car-free; you move on foot or by boat, and there are no roads to drive on, so any transfer from the airport ends at a boat dock or at Piazzale Roma. A single vaporetto ticket is EUR 9.50 for 75 minutes, which adds up fast, so buy a pass: 24 hours is about EUR 25 and pays off after three rides, and travellers aged 6 to 29 should check the Rolling Venice card for cheaper multi-day passes. Validate every ticket at the dock reader, even a pre-bought one, or risk a fine.
Skip the gondola, cross on a traghetto
Gondola rates are fixed by the city, not negotiable: EUR 90 for 30 minutes by day, EUR 110 after 7pm, per boat, and the ride loops the quiet side canals rather than the Grand Canal. For a fraction of that, a EUR 2 traghetto ferries you standing across the Grand Canal in the same kind of boat. To actually travel the Grand Canal, ride vaporetto Line 1.
Eat like a Venetian
The best-value meal is a bacaro crawl: cicchetti at EUR 1 to 3 a bite and a glass of wine at EUR 1.50 to 3, adding up to EUR 12 to 18 for dinner. Avoid the laminated photo-menus with a tout at the door near San Marco and the station. Restaurants must post the menu and any coperto and servizio outside, so read it before sitting, and stand at the bar to skip both charges.

Day-trippers pay an access fee only on roughly 29 tagged 2026 days between April 3 and July 26; overnight guests do not, but they pay the tassa di soggiorno of EUR 1 to 5 a night and need a free QR voucher. St Mark’s Basilica is an active church with an enforced dress code, so cover shoulders and knees. From late October to early March, pack shoes you can get wet for acqua alta.
