Walking the Venice Lagoon on Foot
Real walking in a city with no roads
Venice itself is a city you cross on foot, but for a proper walk, somewhere flat and open with the lagoon on both sides, you head out to the sandbar islands and the market gardens. There are no mountains here and no marked mountain trails; what there is instead is kilometre after kilometre of quiet, level shoreline. Here is where to put in the distance, all on one vaporetto pass.
Pellestrina’s seawall, the long one
The best long walk in the lagoon is the seawall promenade along Pellestrina, the narrow fishing island south of the Lido. Its murazzi, huge 18th-century stone sea defences, carry a walking line for kilometres past small harbours and painted houses, with the Adriatic on one side and the lagoon on the other and almost no other visitors. Reach it by vaporetto to the Lido, then the local bus and ferry down the sandbar.
Sant’Erasmo’s farm loop
Sant’Erasmo, the lagoon’s vegetable island, gives you a flat loop of roughly five to six kilometres along field edges and shore, past a lone fort and a small beach. It is farmland and sky and very little else, which is exactly the appeal. Take vaporetto line 13 from Fondamente Nove and carry your own water.
The Lido and the city gardens
On the Lido you can string together the beachfront, the pine strips and the southern murazzi into an easy half-day on foot. Closer in, walk the Giardini Pubblici and out to the Parco delle Rimembranze at Sant’Elena, the tip of Castello, for a level, green circuit that never leaves the main island.
Practical notes
A 24-hour vaporetto pass at about EUR 25 covers all of these, and the outer islands charge no access fee. Wear real shoes even on the flat, take sun cover and water in summer, and check the last boat back, since the outer-island timetables thin out after dark.
