Veneto Festivals: Verona Opera and Wine
The Veneto’s own calendar, beyond Venice
Venice has Carnevale and the Redentore; the mainland Veneto runs its own calendar, and the marquee event is opera under the stars in a Roman amphitheater. Most of these are day trips from Venice by train, so you can base in the lagoon and pick a night out in Verona or a wine weekend in the hills. Here is the year on the mainland.

Opera in the Verona Arena
The Arena di Verona hosts a summer opera season inside a 2,000-year-old Roman amphitheater, roughly June to early September. Tickets start near EUR 20 for an unreserved stone step (bring a cushion) and climb past EUR 200 for premium seats. It is the single best night out in the Veneto, and Verona is about an hour from Venice by train, so you can go and come back the same evening if the timetable allows.
Verona’s wine fair and Padua’s saint
Vinitaly, Verona’s huge international wine fair each April, is mainly a trade event, but the city fills with tastings and a public “Vinitaly and the City” spin-off worth timing a visit around. In Padua, the Feast of Sant’Antonio on June 13 brings a major religious procession through the streets, free to watch.
Autumn in the wine hills
From September into October, the Conegliano-Valdobbiadene hills, the UNESCO Prosecco landscape, run grape-harvest festivals in the wine villages, with tastings far cheaper than a glass back in a Venice square. You need a car or a tour to reach them. Near Vicenza, the town of Marostica stages its famous human chess game in even-numbered years each September.

Book Verona opera tickets and any festival-weekend accommodation well ahead, and remember that sleeping in Venice keeps you exempt from the day-tripper access fee on the days you head to the mainland and back.
