Five Venice shots for a first trip, in order
If this is your first time, you do not need a long list of spots, you need a plan for one day of good light. Venice rewards timing over gear: the same five shots that are impossible at midday are easy at dawn and dusk. Here they are in the order to take them, all free, no gondola required.
1. San Marco at first light
Start in Piazza San Marco before 8am. The Basilica and the Campanile with an empty square is the shot the day-trippers never get, because they arrive after the tour boats. Warm light, no queue, no crowd to crop out. This one photo justifies the early alarm on its own.
2. A quiet side canal
While the city is still waking, wander two or three bridges off the main route and find a narrow canal with a moored boat and a coloured wall. Reflections are sharpest before wind and boat traffic pick up. There is no single named spot here; getting a little lost is the method.
3. The Rialto Bridge, mid-morning
By mid-morning the Rialto is busy, so shoot the bridge itself from the market side, using the Grand Canal and the passing vaporetti and barges to fill the frame. The fish and produce market beside it adds easy candid detail.
4. The Grand Canal from the Accademia bridge
Late afternoon, walk to the wooden Accademia bridge for the view down the Grand Canal to the domed church of Santa Maria della Salute. It is the classic Venice postcard, and golden hour turns the water and stone warm.
5. Dusk on the Zattere
Finish on the Zattere waterfront in Dorsoduro at sunset, an open, uncrowded stretch looking across the Giudecca Canal. It is where locals walk in the evening once the day-trippers have gone.
The rule that ties it together
Shoot early and late, keep off the bridges with a tripod, and ask before photographing residents. Miss noon entirely; that is the crowd’s hour, not yours.
