Where to stay in Venice without overpaying
Staying overnight in Venice does two things for your budget: it exempts you from the day-tripper access fee, and it gives you the city before 9am and after 5pm, when the crowds are gone. Rooms are small and stock is limited, so book early. Which sestiere you pick decides how much you pay and how quiet your nights are.

The cheaper sestieri
San Marco is the most convenient and the most expensive; you pay a premium for steps from the Basilica. For a better rate with an easy walk in, look at Cannaregio, which is residential, close to Santa Lucia station, and home to the Ghetto, or Castello, the largest and quietest sestiere, a short walk east of San Marco. The tourist tax, and the fee you avoid
Overnight guests pay the tassa di soggiorno, a nightly tourist tax of EUR 1 to 5 a person depending on the accommodation and season, capped at the first five nights and collected at check-in. That is separate from, and instead of, the day-tripper access fee. Staying overnight exempts you from that access fee, but you still need the free QR-code voucher your accommodation issues, so ask for it at check-in.
Getting your luggage there
Venice has 400-plus bridges, most of them stepped, so wheeling a suitcase from the station or bus terminal to your room can mean dozens of step-lifts. Pack light, choose a place near a vaporetto stop, or budget for a porter or a water-taxi transfer. Piazzale Roma and Tronchetto are as far as any wheels reach; from there it is foot or boat.
Booking timing
Room stock inside the historic centre is genuinely small, so reserve three to six months out for peak season and any festival dates. Staying on the mainland at Mestre is cheaper still, but then you are a day-tripper each time you cross in, access fee included on tagged days.
