Near the station: the budget pick
The area around Nice-Ville station is the cheapest base and a five-to-ten-minute tram ride from the seafront. The trade-off is that the immediate station streets skew grittier after dark, so pick a specific well-reviewed address rather than assuming the whole zone is equal. For value and easy day-trip departures, it is hard to beat.
Vieux Nice: mid-range, in the thick of it
Staying in the old town puts you five minutes from the market, dinner, and the socca stalls every night. The cost is noise, as the lanes stay lively late, so ask for a room off the main squares. This is the best fit for first-timers who want to be inside the action rather than commuting to it.
The Carre d’Or: quiet and central
The Golden Square, just north of the Promenade around Place Massena, is the prestige district: quieter, more residential, and still walkable to everything. This is where the grand seafront hotels sit, including Le Meridien and the Hyatt Regency Nice Palais de la Mediterranee. Good for couples who want elegance without giving up a central location.
The Port and Cimiez: character over convenience
Around Port Lympia the mood is maritime and calmer, with colourful Genoese-style buildings and good restaurants a short walk from Vieux Nice. Up the hill, Cimiez is genteel and green, home to the Matisse Museum and the Roman ruins, but you will rely on the bus or tram to reach the beach.
The splurge
If money is no object, Le Negresco on the Promenade is the Riviera’s most recognisable address and runs from roughly EUR 600 to over 1,000 a night. You are paying for the history and the location as much as the room, so treat it as an experience rather than a value play.
