Da Nang Walking Routes: Han River Loop
The best way to walk Da Nang is to split the day by heat: sea-front in the morning, shaded museum and caves through the middle, and the Han River once the sun drops. No walking-tour operator is needed for any of it, and costs stay low. Figures below are Vietnamese dong (VND) estimates that can change, so reconfirm them on the day.
Early morning on the beach
My Khe, Non Nuoc and Man Thai beaches are free to walk. In the dry months from March to August the day heats to between 30 and 36 degrees Celsius, so start at first light. From September to December the surf is heavy, rip currents are a danger, and lifeguards raise red flags, so keep to the dry sand and away from the water’s edge on those days.
Midday: museum and stone village
The Museum of Cham Sculpture, at Bach Dang and 2 Thang 9 streets, is a cool indoor stop. Founded in 1915, it shows Champa altars and statues from the 7th to 13th centuries. Entry is about 60,000 VND.
South of the city, the Non Nuoc stone carving village at the foot of the Marble Mountains is free to stroll. Its workshops have been active for about 300 years, using imported marble because quarrying on the mountain is banned. Up the hill, the Thuy Son caves cost about 40,000 VND to enter. The elevator is about 15,000 VND one way, and the steps are an alternative that costs nothing. Am Phu Cave carries its own ticket of 20,000 to 40,000 VND depending on the source, so ask locally. The stone steps can be slick when wet.
Evening: the river and its bridges
Begin at the Han Market and follow the river along Bach Dang toward the Han River Swing Bridge, Vietnam’s first, which swings 90 degrees at around 23:00 on weekends. From there it is a short stretch to the Dragon Bridge, which is 666 metres long. On Saturdays and Sundays at 21:00, traffic is stopped and the dragon unleashes fire and then water. Choose a spot along Tran Hung Dao street and expect a soaking if you are near the head. Past the bridge, the Son Tra Night Market is free to browse, and a 45-minute river cruise from Bach Dang Pier is about 150,000 to 250,000 VND per person if you prefer to see the lights from the water.
A walk outside the city: Hoi An
Hoi An is about 45 minutes south by road, and its Ancient Town is made for strolling. Yellow shophouses, the Japanese Covered Bridge and pedestrian streets sit close together. A heritage ticket of about 120,000 VND covers five historic sites. A private Grab car from Da Nang is about 300,000 to 400,000 VND each way.
Tips for walkers
- Cross roads at a steady pace and do not dart or stop, because riders steer around predictable movement.
- Carry water, and wear a hat and sunscreen.
- Arrive early on show nights to claim a place along the street.
- For a lift between areas, a short Grab ride costs about 30,000 to 60,000 VND.
