Day Trips and Half-Days Around Chicago
Chicago’s rail network reaches further into the Upper Midwest than most visitors expect. Four places fit comfortably into a single day; two others that come up in searches genuinely do not.
Milwaukee by Amtrak
The Hiawatha service runs from Union Station to Milwaukee’s Intermodal Station in 89 minutes, with 7 round trips Monday through Saturday and 6 on Sunday. One-way coach fares run $19 to $37 depending on advance purchase. The Milwaukee Art Museum, with Santiago Calatrava’s wing-shaped Quadracci Pavilion, sits a 15-minute walk from the station, close to the Harley-Davidson Museum and Third Ward dining. Check Hiawatha schedules at amtrak.com .
Indiana Dunes by South Shore Line
The South Shore Line leaves Millennium Station and reaches Dunes Park Station in about an hour and 20 minutes; treat the one-way fare as roughly $9 and confirm the current number at mysouthshoreline.com before you go, since post-2026 track work has trains running hourly on weekdays and every two hours on weekends. The national park charges $25 per vehicle or $15 per walk-in or train passenger, valid 7 days, covering 15 miles of shoreline and the climb up Mount Baldy. See nps.gov/indu for current conditions.
Oak Park’s Frank Lloyd Wright district
Oak Park is 22 minutes away via the CTA Green Line to Harlem/Lake station for $2.75, or 16 minutes via Metra’s Union Pacific West line for $4. The Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio, where Wright developed the Prairie School between 1889 and 1909, runs guided 60-minute tours for $25, and Unity Temple, his 1908 reinforced-concrete landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, runs its own $20 tour. Book both through flwright.org . Or combine Oak Park highlights on a guided outing via GetYourGuide .
Starved Rock, by car
Starved Rock State Park sits 95 miles southwest in Utica, a 1 hour 45 minute to 2 hour drive on I-80 with no passenger rail link, so a car is required. Eighteen sandstone canyons and 13 miles of marked trails are free to enter with free parking, though the cliffs are unstable and staying on marked paths is enforced. Lots fill and gates close by 10am on summer and peak fall weekends.
What is not a day trip
Galena, about 160 miles west, and Wisconsin Dells, about 195 miles northwest, both run 3.5 to 4 hours of driving each way. Both work far better as an overnight trip than a rushed single day; see the multi-day guide for how to combine either with a rail-based stop.
The verdict: Oak Park and Indiana Dunes both work well car-free, so choose between them by interest rather than logistics, and save Starved Rock for a day when a rental is already on hand. For a hotel near Union Station ahead of an early train, compare stays on Booking.com , and see the multi-day trips guide for stringing these routes together.
