Day Trips from Mecca by Train, Road and Taxi
Travel advisory: The United States advises reconsidering travel to Saudi Arabia amid regional conflict, and Houthi drones and missiles have targeted Saudi cities. UK travel warnings apply near the Yemen border and in Abha and Khamis Mushait, a long way from Mecca, Jeddah and Taif. Confirm current wording on US State Department and UK FCDO before booking tickets.
How you leave Mecca shapes the day: by rail it is fast and cooled, by road it is slower and scenic, and by taxi it is flexible.
The Haram area of Mecca is for Muslims only under Saudi law, with checkpoints on the main roads checking ID or visa. Trips start from the edge of that area. Jeddah and Taif welcome all visitors, and Medina’s Prophet’s Mosque is for Muslims.
By train: Haramain high-speed rail
Makkah station is in Al-Rusaifah, about 3.5 km from the Grand Mosque, with free electric buses and metered taxis for the link. Trains run up to 300 km/h.
- Jeddah: about 30 to 45 minutes. A sample fare from Jeddah Airport is about 34 SAR economy and 78 SAR business.
- Medina: about 2 hours, with economy from roughly 150 SAR and business about three times higher.
Fares depend on class, route and date, so compare them at sar.hhr.sa .
From the Jeddah station, a 15 to 20 minute taxi reaches Al-Balad, the UNESCO-listed old town of coral-stone houses with teak bay windows, Naseef House and the Souq Al-Alawi spice stalls.
By road: Taif
The mountain road to Taif climbs through the Al-Hada pass, and the drive takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours. At about 1,800 metres, the town is noticeably cooler, with rose distilleries, fruit orchards and a cable car at Al-Hada. A private taxi round trip generally costs about 250 to 400 SAR, so agree the fare first. You can browse Taif tours on GetYourGuide if you prefer a guided day.
By taxi: the Hajj sites
Arafat, Muzdalifah and Mina lie east of the city, and Jabal al-Rahmah, about 70 metres high, rises from the Arafat plain. A half-day taxi circuit takes 3 to 4 hours and typically costs about 150 to 250 SAR per car. Muslim visitors treat it as a ziyarah. Outside Hajj the land is mostly open, so ask locally about access.
Timing and safety
Summer midday heat often passes 45C, so book morning departures. During Hajj week, travellers not performing Hajj may be stopped from flying into Jeddah, Medina and Taif, so plan around those dates. Medina visitors also need a separate Nusuk permit for the Rawdah, issued once per 365 days.
