Mecca Museums and Heritage Visits: Booking Guide
Travel advisory: The US government suggests reconsidering travel to Saudi Arabia because of regional conflict, and Houthi missiles and drones have reached Saudi cities. For the UK, warnings relate to the Yemen frontier area and to Abha and Khamis Mushait, with Mecca absent from the list. Both governments publish updates: travel.state.gov and the UK foreign travel advice .
Each of Mecca’s museum-style sites has its own booking route, and knowing which is which saves a wasted trip across town.
Under Saudi law the Haram area is reserved for Muslims, and checkpoints on the access roads verify ID or visa. These museums are for Muslim visitors. The final section points readers who are not Muslim toward Jeddah.
Ticketed: the Clock Tower museum
Inside the Makkah Royal Clock Tower, the museum covers timekeeping, sundials, the solar system and an open-air terrace with a view down to the Kaaba. Tickets are tiered, running from a basic viewing option to guided packages. The official site, theclocktowers.com , is the place for current tiers and opening times. Resale listings elsewhere may carry different prices.
Free, by booking: Kiswah and the Two Holy Mosques exhibition
Both sit in Umm al-Joud, roughly 10 km west of the Grand Mosque along the old Jeddah road, so allow a taxi ride each way.
- Kiswah complex: the workshop where more than 200 craftspeople make the Kaaba’s cloth, using about 670 kg of silk and 120 kg of gold- and silver-plated wire. Entry is free and booking is required, with small groups going in at timed slots.
- Exhibition of the Two Holy Mosques Architecture: free, with items such as a carved teak Kaaba door from 1863, old Zamzam well pulleys and early Qur’an manuscripts. Check before going, because visits are arranged through the official channels.
Nusuk is the usual route for permits, and it is worth checking there first at nusuk.sa .
Mixed: Hira Cultural District
Beside Jabal al-Nour in north Mecca, the district has a Revelation Exhibition, a Holy Quran museum and craft stalls. Grounds are free and the exhibition charges modest ticket prices. Opening hours change by day, and Friday daytime is quiet, so confirm on Discover Makkah .
Travel between them
Taxis are the simplest option for the western sites, and the Makkah bus network, at about 3 to 5 SAR a ride, covers the centre. Avoid the midday hours in summer, when temperatures often pass 45C.
A museum day for everyone: Jeddah
Readers who are not Muslim can head to Jeddah, where the Al-Balad old town is open to all. The Haramain train takes about 30 to 45 minutes, with fares by class at sar.hhr.sa . You can look at Jeddah heritage tours on GetYourGuide for a guided route.
