Gansbaai Day Trips by Distance: Hermanus, Agulhas
Trips Ranked by Drive Time
The Overberg offers several outings from Gansbaai, and the sensible way to choose is by how long you want to spend in the car. Fuel up before you set out, keep the tank above half, and aim to be home before dark.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve
Grootbos lies on the R43 between Stanford and Gansbaai, and it is a half-day outing by booked tour only. The Florilegium Half Day Tour is R1,250 per person for South African residents and R1,950 for international visitors. It starts at 09:30, runs about 4.5 hours and operates Wednesday to Sunday. Children must be at least 12, and groups top out at 10 people.
Stanford and the Klein River
Stanford is a village on the Klein River, about 20 km from Gansbaai. Visitors come for wine and cheese.
Hermanus
The R43 takes you to Hermanus in about 40 minutes. Visit the cliff path and the Old Harbour, then continue to the Hemel-en-Aarde wine valley if you have time. A Marine Dynamics shuttle runs from Hermanus to Kleinbaai at R700 per person for anyone coming the other way for a boat trip.
Cape Agulhas
The southernmost tip of Africa is about 110 km from Gansbaai by sealed road, so budget 2 hours each way and start early. The lighthouse dates from 1848. A R81.9 million precinct opened in April 2026 with an interpretation centre, a 1 km boardwalk and the Needles Restaurant. SANParks sets the lighthouse fee and hours, so check with them first.
Elim
Elim is a Moravian mission village, founded in 1824, that is owned by the church and kept as a heritage village. Coming from Gansbaai you travel on gravel by way of Baardskeerdersbos, which is slow. Ask locally about the state of the road before you commit. It does not work as a quick drive.
A Trip to Skip
De Hoop Nature Reserve involves a long route that is partly gravel. Treat it as a separate project instead of a day trip from Gansbaai.
