Helsinki Day Trips by Travel Time
Count the minutes before you pick a day trip from Helsinki. Porvoo is 50 to 80 minutes away, Nuuksio about an hour with a short walk at the end, and Tallinn two hours or more each way by sea. All three work without a car, which keeps the choice simple: match the trip to the hours you have.
Porvoo: 50 to 80 minutes
Coaches from the Kamppi terminal reach Porvoo in 50 to 80 minutes, depending on stops, and OnniBus and Matkahuolto run about every 20 minutes (onnibus.com ). The old town sits on a river lined with red-ochre storehouses. Its cobbled lanes hold craft workshops and cafes, and the 15th century stone cathedral stands above them. Finland’s oldest chocolate maker, Brunberg, has a shop here; it was founded in 1871. Porvoo was chartered in 1346, making it the country’s second-oldest town. A steamship, the J.L. Runeberg, makes a slow 3.5-hour river-and-sea run in the warm months only, so look up that season’s schedule if you want it.
Nuuksio: about an hour, then a walk
Take a commuter train to Espoo Centre in about 25 minutes, then bus 245 or 245A. The bus reaches Haltia in 20 to 25 minutes and the Haukkalampi stop in 25 to 30, followed by a 1.5 km walk to the lake. In winter the route ends at Nuuksionpää. Check the ticket zone for the park end of the route in the HSL journey planner (hsl.fi ). Marked trails include the 4 km Korpinkierros and the 2 km Punarinnankierros, and Everyman’s Right lets you pick bilberries and chanterelles in late summer. The Haltia nature centre is a good wet-weather stop, and park directions are at luontoon.fi .
Tallinn: two hours or more by sea
Fast ferries cross in about 2 to 2.5 hours. Tallink sails from West Terminal 2 and offers one-way fares from about €28.80, Eckerö Line also uses West Terminal 2, and Viking Line departs from Katajanokka. Fares change with the date and how early you book, so compare at tallink.com and portofhelsinki.fi . In Tallinn, the medieval Old Town is UNESCO-listed, and the walk takes in Pikk and Vene streets, Town Hall Square, and Toompea hill with Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.
