Hoi An Day Trips on a Budget: 4 Real Options

Hoi An has no airport or train station of its own, so you’re already used to short transfers by the time you arrive. That makes it a solid base for day trips too. Here are the 4 that are actually worth the trip, with real distances and costs, not a padded list.
My Son Sanctuary (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
About 40km/1 hour southwest, My Son is a cluster of Cham (Champa) Hindu red-brick temple ruins dating from the 4th to 13th centuries. Much of it was destroyed by a single week of US bombing in August 1969, and the craters are still visible among the standing towers. It’s a UNESCO site (inscribed 1999, separate from the Ancient Town), and it gets hot and busy fast, so go early. A guided sunrise tour from Hoi An runs roughly $15-25 per person; a private taxi/motorbike costs less but skips the historical context.
Da Nang: Marble Mountains and Ba Na Hills
About 30-45 minutes north. The Marble Mountains are five marble and limestone hills with caves, pagodas, and a stair climb to coastal views, cheap to visit on your own by taxi or Grab. Ba Na Hills, further out, is a cable-car resort topped by the Golden Bridge, the giant stone “Hands” that opened in 2018 and now shows up on every Vietnam itinerary. It’s a manufactured, ticketed spectacle (full-day tickets run well over 1,000,000 VND with the cable car included), but it delivers the photo. Da Nang itself also has My Khe Beach and the Dragon Bridge if you want to extend the day.
Hue, the former imperial capital
About 3-3.5 hours north via the scenic Hai Van Pass, Hue’s Citadel and Imperial City (another UNESCO World Heritage Site) make for a long day trip or, better, an overnight. Open-tour buses and private cars both run this route; the pass itself is worth the ride for the coastal views alone.
The Cham Islands (Cu Lao Cham)
A short boat ride offshore, Cu Lao Cham is a marine UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with snorkeling and quieter beaches than the mainland. Trips are seasonal and weather-dependent (verify sailing conditions before booking), typically a half or full day by boat tour.
Which Hoi An day trip is worth it if I only have time for one?
My Son. It’s the shortest round trip of the four, it’s the region’s other UNESCO site alongside the Ancient Town itself, and unlike Ba Na Hills or Hue it doesn’t turn into a half-day commitment either way.
Day trip costs and times
| Day trip | Distance/time | Typical cost |

| My Son Sanctuary | ~40km / 1 hr each way | ~$15-25 (guided) |
| Marble Mountains | ~20km / 30-45 min | Entry fee + transport |
| Ba Na Hills / Golden Bridge | ~35-45km / 45-60 min | 1,000,000+ VND (ticket + cable car) |

Book a My Son sunrise tour or a Ba Na Hills and Golden Bridge day trip ahead of time in peak season, since both fill up. My Son Sanctuary and Hoi An Ancient Town are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, inscribed in 1999: see the official listing for My Son and for Hoi An Ancient Town . Most travelers need an e-visa first through the official evisa.gov.vn portal. If you’re mapping out how these fit around your stay, our 4-day itinerary builds a full day trip in already.
