Ljubljana Attraction Tours: Guided or Self-Led
Guided or Self-Led: Ljubljana Attractions
Some of Ljubljana’s best attractions let you wander at will, and a few only open their doors with a guide. Knowing which is which saves queuing in the wrong place.
Guided only
- Plečnik House: the architect’s former home in Trnovo is visited on a guided tour that starts every full hour. It runs Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 and is shut on Mondays. Adults pay about €9 and a family ticket is €18, according to the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana .
- Škocjan Caves: this UNESCO site is toured with a guide through an underground river canyon at roughly 12°C. Times and prices change, so use Škocjan Caves Park to plan. It is about 75 km from Ljubljana.
- Postojna Cave: an electric train carries you in, and the visit then continues on foot. The cave stays near 10°C all year.
Self-guided, with an audioguide option
Ljubljana Castle sells an audioguide or a Time Machine experience at €23 for adults and €16 for reduced fares, a little less online at €20.70 and €14.40. Entry itself is €15 at the ticket points or €13.50 online, and €19 or €17.10 with the funicular. The tower, the Museum of Puppetry and the history exhibitions are included. The last ticket goes one hour before closing, and Ljubljana Castle has the latest hours.
The National Gallery of Slovenia is self-guided and costs €10 for adults and €5 for students. The original Robba Fountain figures are inside, together with medieval church art and Slovenian Impressionists such as Ivan Grohar and Rihard Jakopič.
Hands-on attractions
House of Experiments at Trubarjeva cesta 39 invites visitors to test physics, light and sound for themselves, for about €11 for adults. The Museum of Illusions at Kongresni trg 13 costs about €9.95. Both suit anyone who dislikes standing in front of glass cases.
On the river
Boat cruises glide down the Ljubljanica. The wooden electric boat takes about 50 minutes at roughly €16 per adult, and the Žaba boat takes an hour at around €10. Both pass under the Triple, Cobblers’ and Dragon bridges.
Postojna options
The cave alone is €34.90 at peak. The Two Adventures ticket that adds Predjama Castle is €49.90 to €58.90, and the 100% Cave Experience is €44.40 to €60.50. The park is 46 km from the capital, and Postojna Cave Park sells every variant. Prefer a guide-led transfer? See Postojna tours on GetYourGuide .
One pass for several
The Ljubljana Card, at €41, €49 or €54 for 24, 48 or 72 hours, includes a guided city tour along with the castle, river cruise and National Gallery. It is covered on the Ljubljana Card page .
Tip
Reserve the guided slots first, since those have fixed times, and fit the open-ended attractions around them. For ideas that suit different budgets see the Ljubljana day trips page .
