Montenegro Activities: Coast, Lakes and Canyons
Montenegro Activities by Region
Distances in Montenegro are short, so the easiest way to plan is by region. Each area below lists what is worth the time, what it costs in euros, and a few practical points. Check figures again before you travel, as tariffs change.
Bay of Kotor
- Fortress steps: the walls above Kotor climb 1,350 steps to San Giovanni, about 260 meters of ascent. The ticket is €15 in season. Early morning is cooler and quieter.
- Cable car: an 11-minute gondola links Dub with Kuk (1,348 m). Round trip €25, one way €14, seasonal. Details are on kotorcablecar.me .
- Our Lady of the Rocks: a man-made island reached by small boat from Perast for about €5 to €10 return; the church inside charges about €3.
- Boat circuits: shared speedboats leave Kotor for roughly three hours, typically €35 to €45.
Budva Riviera
- Old Town and Citadela: the walled peninsula was rebuilt after the 1979 earthquake. The Citadela costs about €3.50.
- Beaches: Mogren has golden sand and calm water; Jaz has gentle depths and rental kayaks and pedal boats. Other beaches nearby are mostly pebble.
- Sveti Stefan: the island is a private resort. Sveti Stefan Beach and King’s Beach give public views of it.
Lake Skadar and Cetinje
- Lake boats: from Virpazar, a two-hour boat trip typically costs €20 to €30 plus a €5 park fee. Expect water lilies, reed channels, pelicans and more than 280 recorded bird species.
- Pavlova Strana: a viewpoint above the double bend of the Crnojević River, on the road toward Cetinje.
- Royal Cetinje: King Nikola’s Palace is about €5 and the Biljarda museum about €3.
Northern Mountains
- Tara rafting: a 14 km run from Brštanovica to Šćepan Polje, Class III and IV, usually €45 to €65 with equipment, transfer and lunch. GetYourGuide lists packaged trips for comparison.
- Black Lake: an easy 3.5 km shore loop 3 km from Žabljak, with rowboats for about €8 an hour.
- Biogradska Gora: forest walks around Lake Biograd, with a €4 daily park fee.
- Zip lines: zip lines cross the Tara canyon next to the Đurđevića Tara Bridge, which stands 172 meters above the river.

Useful Basics
- The euro is the only currency, though Montenegro is outside the EU.
- Buses link the main towns. The coast from Herceg Novi to Budva has no railway; the only passenger line runs from Bar through Podgorica to Belgrade.
- Churches and monasteries ask for modest dress, and visitors keep their shoes on.
- Montenegro has a high road-fatality rate for Europe, so drive defensively on mountain roads.
