Šipčanik Cellar at Plantaže
South of Podgorica by about 10 km, at Ćemovsko Polje, the Plantaže winery ages wine in a 356-meter tunnel that was once a hidden military hangar. The tunnel lies about 30 meters underground and opened as a cellar in 2007. Guided visits finish with Vranac red wine and local ham, olive paste and sheep cheese. Reservations are required in advance through plantaze.com .
Cetinje’s Palaces
King Nikola’s Palace, completed in 1863, keeps its royal furnishings, state portraits and diplomatic gifts. Biljarda, once the fortified home of Prince-Bishop Njegoš, has a 1917 relief map of the country in its courtyard. The old capital is around 45 minutes from Kotor or Budva by road.
Risan Mosaics
Risan lies in the inner Bay of Kotor and is considered its oldest settlement. Its mosaics come from a 2nd-century Roman villa. One shows Hypnos, the Roman god of sleep, and is the only such depiction known on the Adriatic. Prehistoric rock carvings can be found at nearby Lipci.
Kotor Museums and the Cathedral
- Maritime Museum: in the Grgurina Palace, with ship models, old charts and captains’ portraits. Check opening times locally.
- St Tryphon’s Cathedral: consecrated in 1166, with a silver reliquary of the patron saint. Modest dress applies and shoes stay on.
- Cat Museum: a small museum on Trg od Drva that asks for a €1 donation.
Budva Citadela
The seaside fortress in Budva’s Old Town has a museum and a maritime library inside the walls. Budva’s Old Town was rebuilt after the 1979 earthquake, so the buildings are reconstructions of older streets.
Aquarium Boka
Montenegro’s first public marine aquarium opened in 2021 in Dobrota, at the Institute of Marine Biology. It has 18 tanks of Adriatic life and a loggerhead turtle conservation exhibit. Typical hours are Wednesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 19:00, and discounts apply with the Blue Pass or Kotor Card. See aquariumboka.ucg.ac.me for the current schedule.
Practical Notes
- Attractions inside Kotor’s Old Town are close together; the town itself is free to enter.
- The fortress wall climb above Kotor is a separate €15 ticket in season and is not part of any museum fee.
- Cetinje is a coastal day out, while Plantaže is a short drive from Podgorica, so plan them as separate outings.
