Montreal Festivals on a Budget: 6 to Plan For

Six festivals that move hotel and train prices

Festival dates matter more when Montreal is your base than when it’s your only stop. A citywide hotel-rate spike also tightens VIA Rail availability toward Quebec City and Ottawa that same week, so it’s worth planning your day trips around the calendar, not against it. Here’s the verified 2026 lineup and what each one means for a day-trip base.

Winter

Igloofest (Jan 15-Feb 7) is an outdoor electronic-music festival at the Old Port, DJs playing through genuinely cold nights, dress for it rather than for the show. Montréal en Lumière (Feb 27-Mar 7), with its Nuit Blanche all-night program (Feb 28), closes out winter with light installations, outdoor performances, and food stalls downtown and through the Quartier des Spectacles.

Late spring

The F1 Canadian Grand Prix (May 22-24) is the single biggest hotel-price spike of the year. Book a room and any VIA Rail day trip weeks ahead if your dates land anywhere near race weekend, even day-trippers headed to Quebec City or Ottawa feel the squeeze on train seats and fares.

Summer

The Montreal International Jazz Festival (Jun 25-Jul 4) fills downtown with free outdoor concerts and ticketed indoor shows. Just for Laughs (Jul 15-26) is the city’s comedy festival, stand-up and improv across multiple venues. Osheaga (Jul 31-Aug 2) closes out the summer run with a multi-day music and arts festival on Île Notre-Dame. All three add to hotel demand, though none spikes prices the way the Grand Prix does.

Pairing festivals with day trips

None of these six overlap with sugar shack season (late February through April) or Eastern Townships fall foliage weekends, which peak late September into October, both are naturally quieter, cheaper windows if you’d rather have Montreal, and its VIA Rail seats, to yourself before or after a day trip. Book the train and any city hotel for festival weeks, race weekend especially, as early as your dates allow; the rest of the year’s calendar is far more flexible.
