Montreal Day Trips on a Budget: 5 Picks

The city core keeps you busy for 3-4 days, then real day trips start

Once that’s done, five genuine day trips fan out from the island, none of them require more than a car or a VIA Rail ticket from Gare Centrale. This isn’t the full regional breakdown, it’s the honest short list for a bare Montreal trip with a spare day or two.
1. Montérégie / Mont-Saint-Hilaire, about 40-45 minutes
The closest true day trip, apple and cider country just southeast of the island. Best in early fall when the orchards are in season. A rental car or a tour makes this easy without needing a full travel day.
2. Eastern Townships (Cantons-de-l’Est), about 1-2 hours
Quebec’s wine route, plus Magog and Lake Memphremagog, the Bromont and Sutton villages, and a spa day at Balnea if that’s the mood. Fall foliage season is the strongest pull, but this genuinely works as a single day, unlike the Quebec City run below.
3. Laurentians / Mont-Tremblant, about 1.5 hours north
A ski village in winter, hiking and lake swimming in summer. Doable as a long day trip or worth an overnight if the goal is actual trail time rather than a quick look.
4. Trois-Rivières, about 1.5 hours northeast
Sits on the same rail line as Quebec City, so it also works as a scenic stop on the way rather than a separate trip. A smaller, calmer riverside city if Montreal’s pace needs a break.
5. Quebec City, about 3 hours each way
The marquee pairing, Old Québec’s UNESCO World Heritage core and the Château Frontenac, honestly overnight-better. A same-day round trip by car or the roughly 3-hour VIA Rail (5 departures a day) spends more of the day traveling than sightseeing. If a spare day or two exists, book a hotel and make it two days instead of forcing a single exhausting one.

Check opening hours and transit schedules before committing a full day, some of these run infrequent bus or rail service outside peak season. A rental car covers the Eastern Townships, Laurentians, and Montérégie easily; VIA Rail from Gare Centrale is the car-free option for Quebec City and Trois-Rivières. None of these five require booking weeks out, but a Quebec City hotel is worth locking down early if the Jazz Festival (Jun 25-Jul 4) or F1 weekend (May 22-24, 2026) overlaps the trip, since Montreal’s own hotel spike often follows the same dates.
