Most Maldives day trips are sold out of a resort by boat, priced for resort guests. The budget version runs the other way, out of Male by public ferry, and it reaches the same reefs and sandbanks for a fraction of the cost. Here’s what’s actually worth the ferry fare.

Hulhumale: the free day trip
Hulhumale, the reclaimed “new town” across the 2km Sinamale Bridge, is the cheapest day trip in the country because it’s free to reach: walk or cycle the bridge, catch the local bus (about a dollar), or take the public ferry, which runs every 15 minutes, including Fridays when most other routes pause. A proper swimming beach and a car-free Central Park with an open-air gym cost nothing once you’re across.
Maafushi: the bikini-beach day trip
Maafushi, the original local-island guesthouse hub, is reachable by public MTCC ferry in about 90 minutes for roughly $1.50-3, or by speedboat in 30 minutes for $25-30. The fenced bikini beach on its northern tip is the one place on the island where swimwear is fine outside a resort; the free house reef right off the sand is good for snorkeling on its own, no boat needed. The ferry runs a limited daily schedule and skips some days, commonly Fridays, so check the current timetable rather than assuming a departure, and time your return before the sand gets comfortable; missing the last ferry back turns a cheap day trip into an unplanned guesthouse night.
Gulhi and Thulusdhoo: quieter and surf-focused options
Gulhi, a smaller South Malé Atoll island with its own tourist bikini beach, is the calmer alternative to Maafushi, reachable by speedboat (25-30 minutes) or public ferry (about 75 minutes, skipping Fridays and Mondays). Thulusdhoo, nicknamed “Cokes Island” for its working Coca-Cola bottling plant, sits beside a fast reef break that draws visiting surfers; a roughly 30-minute speedboat from the airport area gets you there.
The one boat tour worth booking ahead
A half-day sandbank and snorkeling tour, commonly $60-90 and usually run out of Maafushi, goes past the free house reef to open water and a sandbar stop; some operators add a seasonal manta ray or whale shark run further into the atoll, ask before booking since that’s weather- and season-dependent, never guaranteed.
