Where to Stay in Phuket: 8 Areas by Budget
Phuket is a real island, about 48km from north to south, so picking one base and day-tripping out beats trying to see everything from a single hotel. Here is what each area is actually good for.
- Patong for nightlife and the biggest range of budget-to-mid guesthouses and hostels; skip it if you want quiet.
- Kata, the best all-round first-timer base on a budget: a good beach with cheap-to-mid rooms on the strip behind it.
- Karon, quieter than Patong, still close to Freedom Beach and Kata, and generally a little cheaper.
- Old Town (Phuket Town) for culture and cafes over beach access; some of the cheapest guesthouse rates on the island, since it’s inland and away from the resort strips.
- Bang Tao / Laguna, the closest area to the airport, but resort-heavy and priced well above the rest of this list.
- Surin / Kamala, upscale and quieter, another area where budget options thin out fast.
- Nai Harn / Rawai, a relaxed local-expat area near Promthep Cape, with a mix of budget guesthouses and pricier villas.
- Nai Yang / Mai Khao, quiet beaches up near the airport (also Sirinat National Park), with fewer budget beds but far less crowded.
If you’re not on a budget
Bang Tao and Surin carry a resort tier well above the budget-to-mid range covered here; search by area on the link below if that’s what you want, since naming specific luxury properties isn’t the point of a budget guide.
Search Phuket hotels by area on Booking.com or specifically Kata Beach hotels if you want the first-timer pick above. Book ahead for the November to April dry season, when rooms fill up and prices climb.
We are not going to invent specific budget hostel names here; search by area and price on the link above and cross-check reviews, since Phuket’s budget scene turns over fast.
Whichever area you land in, submit the free TDAC arrival form online within 72 hours of landing; it’s mandatory for every foreign visitor and separate from your hotel booking. Factor in the roughly 250 to 350 THB fee most foreign cards pay per ATM withdrawal too, since you’ll want cash on hand at check-in for any guesthouse that doesn’t take cards.
Once you have a base, line up the things to do and a 2-day itinerary around it.
