Krabi on a Budget: Cheap and Free Things to Do
Krabi is a province on Thailand’s Andaman coast, not one beach town, and that matters if you’re counting baht. Base in Ao Nang for the shortest boat rides and the highest prices, or Krabi Town for local rates and the region’s bus and ferry hub. Railay, the karst-walled peninsula everyone wants to see, has no road in from either base, in any season, you cross by shared longtail for roughly 100 baht. Dry season (Nov-Apr) means calmer seas and reliable boat days at higher prices; wet season (May-Oct) is cheaper and quieter, with a real chance of a cancelled boat trip. The part that matters for a budget trip: most of what makes Krabi worth visiting, the beaches, costs nothing at all.

That splurge line actually covers three different products, don’t let a tour operator conflate them. The 4 Islands tour strings together Chicken Island, Koh Poda, Tup Island (joined by a sandbar that only shows at low tide) and Phra Nang Cave Beach. The Hong Islands trip is a separate lagoon-and-cliff cluster near Ao Thalane, often paired with mangrove kayaking. A Ko Phi Phi day trip is its own, longer boat ride, and Maya Bay there, the beach from The Beach, reopened on 1 January 2022 after nearly four years closed. Where should you base yourself on a budget?
Ao Nang has the shortest boat rides and the widest room selection, but prices commonly double in the November-April dry season and everyday costs, food, tours, taxis, skew touristy. Krabi Town runs cheaper across the board: budget guesthouses, the bus and ferry hub, and its own Friday-to-Sunday walking street with the cheapest sit-down meals in the province, at the cost of a short songthaew or boat transfer to reach Railay and the islands. How do you get to Railay without paying for a tour?
Only by longtail boat, there is no road in from any direction and never has been. A shared boat from Ao Nang beach costs roughly 100 baht per person for the 10-minute crossing, cheaper than any bundled Railay excursion. Cheap eats: Krabi Town’s walking street versus Ao Nang
Krabi Town’s walking street runs Friday through Sunday, roughly 5-10pm, between the Vogue Department Store and the Vieng Thong Hotel, with dishes commonly running 30-60 baht, noticeably cheaper than Ao Nang’s Landmark Night Market or its Wednesday evening stalls on road 4203. Fresh grilled seafood sold by weight at beachside stalls is a reliable budget win at either base. Keep small baht notes on hand, cash is what markets, songthaews and longtails actually run on.
Cheap ways to see the inland sights
The Emerald Pool (Sa Morakot) and Blue Pool (Sa Nam Dokmai), both in Khlong Thom district, plus the nearby hot springs, are usually done as one inland day behind a single, modest park fee, a higher foreigner rate applies at Thai national parks generally, but it’s a fraction of any tour price. Reach them by scooter, roughly 150-200 baht a day to rent, wear a helmet and check the bike first, motorbike accidents are a genuinely serious risk in Thailand, not an exaggeration, or by joining a cheap shared tour instead of riding yourself. Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea) costs nothing to climb: over 1,200 steps, commonly cited as 1,237, to a hilltop Buddha and a real view over the province. A songthaew, a shared pickup taxi, between Krabi Town and Ao Nang runs roughly 60 baht; a tuk-tuk within Ao Nang runs roughly 100 baht. Between islands, a shared longtail is the self-hop option, cheaper per person than chartering a private speedboat, but lining up multiple stops yourself burns a full day for what a bundled tour covers in one price and one boat. That gap is exactly why the one real splurge on this list is the tour, not the do-it-yourself version.
Entry, safety and the one thing you can’t skip
Most Western passports, US, UK, Canada, Australia, most of the EU, get 60 days visa-exempt in Thailand, though double-check your specific nationality before you fly. Since 1 May 2025 every foreign arrival must also complete the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card online in advance, commonly cited as roughly 72 hours ahead, that step is mandatory and it costs nothing either way.
