Basing yourself for five days: Ao Nang vs Krabi Town
Ao Nang puts you steps from the Railay longtail launch and the tour desks, at beach-town prices; Krabi Town, the actual provincial capital, runs cheaper for rooms and food and adds a roughly 60-baht songthaew ride to reach the boats. Either works over five days; splitting your stay, a couple of nights in each, is a reasonable middle ground if you want Krabi Town’s Friday-Sunday walking street without giving up Ao Nang’s convenience on boat days.

Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea) costs nothing to climb, over 1,200 steps, commonly cited as 1,237, to a hilltop Buddha and a real view over the province. Cover your shoulders and knees and expect monkeys on the lower stairs, it’s a working temple. From there, the Emerald Pool (Sa Morakot) and Blue Pool (Sa Nam Dokmai), both in Khlong Thom district, plus a nearby hot springs stop, are usually done as one loop behind a single, modest park fee.
Reach all three by scooter, roughly 150-200 baht a day to rent, wear a helmet and check the bike’s condition first, motorbike accidents are a genuinely serious risk in Thailand, not an exaggerated one, or by a cheap shared songthaew or tour if you would rather not ride. The Blue Pool is not for swimming, currents and depth make it a look-not-swim stop; the Emerald Pool is the one you actually get into.
Day 4: a Phi Phi day trip
Ko Phi Phi is its own archipelago, roughly a 1.5 to 2-hour ferry or a 40 to 50-minute speedboat from Ao Nang, and most people who can afford the extra night do it as an overnight rather than this rushed version. On a budget day trip, the draw is Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh, the filming location for The Beach. It reopened on 1 January 2022 after nearly four years closed and now runs under real limits, no boats anchoring in the bay itself, no swimming off the main beach, capped and time-limited entry through online ticketing, so don’t go in expecting the old free-for-all, and don’t believe a stale claim that it is still shut.
A day-tour boat runs roughly 900-1,500 baht, plus a national park fee for foreigners at Maya Bay itself, unverified at an exact current rate, so budget a little extra rather than counting on a fixed figure. Weather cancels this day more readily than Railay or the 4 Islands, keep it flexible in your five-day sequence rather than locking it to a fixed morning.
Day 5: a free, slower finish
Spend your last full day at Ao Nang beach or the quieter Nopparat Thara next door, both free, no gate, no minimum spend.
