Krabi on a Budget: Prices and Free Beaches
Krabi is a province on Thailand’s Andaman coast, not one beach town, and that changes the budget math. Base in Krabi Town for the lowest prices or Ao Nang for the shortest boat rides; either way, the karst-cliff beaches at Railay have no road access, in any season, you cross by longtail for roughly 100 baht. Most of what actually makes Krabi worth visiting costs nothing: Ao Nang, Nopparat Thara and Phra Nang Cave Beach are all free once you’re standing on the sand. The one real spend on a Krabi trip is a single island boat tour. Season decides the rest: dry (Nov-Apr) means calmer seas and reliable, pricier boat days; wet (May-Oct) is cheaper and quieter, with a real chance a boat trip gets cancelled.

Which beaches are actually free?
Ao Nang beach and neighbouring Nopparat Thara beach cost nothing: no gate, no minimum spend, just sand and a towel. Railay’s Phra Nang Cave Beach is effectively free too, once you’ve paid the roughly 100-baht longtail crossing over, there’s no separate fee for the beach or the small cave shrine at its back. The catch is that Railay has no road in from any direction, in any season, so the beach itself is free but reaching it never is, budget the 100 baht each way.
Is Krabi Town or Ao Nang the cheaper base?
Krabi Town wins on price: it’s the provincial capital and the region’s bus and ferry hub, with budget guesthouses and its own Friday-to-Sunday walking street running the cheapest sit-down meals in the province. Ao Nang costs more across the board, rooms, food, tours, taxis, but it sits closer to Railay and the main boat launch point, so the extra cost buys convenience rather than anything better. A short songthaew or boat transfer connects the two either way, so neither choice locks you out of the other.
The one real splurge: an island boat tour
Three separate products get sold here, and a budget traveler should only pay for one at a time. The 4 Islands tour strings together Chicken Island, Koh Poda, Tup Island (joined to Chicken Island by a sandbar that only appears at low tide) and Phra Nang Cave Beach. What do the inland pools and parks cost?
The Emerald Pool (Sa Morakot) and Blue Pool (Sa Nam Dokmai), both in Khlong Thom district, plus the nearby hot springs, sit behind a single, modest national park fee. Foreigners pay a higher rate than Thai nationals at every Thai park, but the exact current figure isn’t fixed enough to print here. Reach them by scooter (roughly 150-200 baht a day, wear a helmet, motorbike accidents are a genuinely serious risk in Thailand) or by joining a cheap shared tour instead. Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea) costs nothing at all to climb: over 1,200 steps, commonly cited as 1,237, to a hilltop Buddha and a real view over the province. Check the national park fee schedule before you go, and cover your shoulders and knees at the temple either way.
Krabi’s cheap season: May to October
The southwest monsoon runs roughly May through October: rooms and tours cost less and the province is quieter, but rougher seas can cancel a ferry or boat-tour departure outright, and jellyfish risk rises near shore. November through April is the reliable, pricier window for every boat day, Railay included.
