Multi-Day Trips from Naples: Capri to Caserta
Three trips worth a night away
Many visitors treat Naples as a base for day trips. A night or two away changes the pace, and three routes work well from the city: the Amalfi Coast, the islands and the royal palace at Caserta. All start from stations you can reach on public transport.
Overnight on the Amalfi Coast
Take the regular Circumvesuviana from Napoli Garibaldi to Sorrento, then switch to SITA Sud coaches along the coast road. Fares are about EUR2.40 from Sorrento to Positano and about EUR3.40 from Sorrento to Amalfi, and a COSTIERASITA 24-hour pass costs EUR10. Check times on the SITA Sud site . Ferries along the coast start from about mid-May, and in winter only Sorrento to Naples boats keep running, so go in the warm months if you want to move by sea.
The Sentiero degli Dei, or Path of the Gods, is the big walk of the area: a high trail above Positano, reached by SITA bus to Bomerano or Agerola or on foot from Positano. It is exposed, so skip it in wet weather or if heights bother you. Search Amalfi Coast stays on Booking.com well ahead for the warm months.
The islands: Capri, Procida, Ischia
Hydrofoils leave Molo Beverello. Capri is about 50 minutes away and costs about EUR21 to EUR30 each way, with the EUR5 landing fee included from April to October. The Blue Grotto is reported at EUR18 to EUR19 in cash and closes in rough sea; it is normally shut in winter. Procida is quieter and best with a night, so you see its harbour at dawn once the day-trippers have left. Ischia has natural hot springs, such as Baia di Sorgeto, where volcanic heat warms pools on the shoreline.
Use Molo Beverello for departures. The Pozzuoli port area is recovering from the July earthquake, though ferries there are running.
Caserta and the Vesuvian towns
The Reggia di Caserta is reached by direct train from Napoli Centrale, then a walk of around 5 minutes. It opens 8:30 to 19:00 and is closed on Tuesdays, and the park and royal apartments cost EUR18, or EUR12 for the apartments only. Allow a full day.
Pair it with a day on the Vesuvian side: Herculaneum about 20 minutes by Circumvesuviana, EUR16, and Pompeii at about 35 minutes, EUR20. Pompeii has a daily limit of 20,000 and named tickets, listed on the Pompeii ticket page . The Vesuvius crater trail is online only, EUR10, in timed slots.
Combine them
A practical 4-night plan:
- Night 1 and 2 in Naples: Spaccanapoli, Cappella Sansevero, MANN and Pompeii or Herculaneum.
- Night 3 on Procida or Capri.
- Night 4 back in Naples, with Caserta the next morning before your departure.
Money and logistics
- The Artecard Campania 3-day pass is listed at about EUR41 for two admissions plus local transport. Check the Artecard site for the current price.
- Keep bags zipped on trains and in Piazza Garibaldi, where pickpockets work.
- Check strike calendars before any train or boat day.
- The Phlegraean Fields have had earthquakes since 31 July, with a yellow volcano alert, and Metro Line 2 to Pozzuoli is closed, so stay with the routes above.
