Venice Multi-Day Trips: Beyond Italy

Verona and the Dolomites are genuinely close enough to Venice to do in a single day, and that’s exactly why they aren’t on this page. This one is only for places that reward at least one night away, out past the Veneto region entirely.
Florence: fast enough to tempt a day trip, worth more than that
Direct high-speed trains, Frecciarossa and Italo combined, cover the route in roughly 2 hours to 2 hours 20 minutes, with more than 36 direct departures a day. That speed tempts some travelers into a rushed round trip, but a there-and-back eats over 4 hours of travel for a city that genuinely rewards at least one overnight. Milan: a different register entirely
Direct high-speed trains run roughly 2 hours 6 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes, with 40 to 60 direct departures daily, Italy’s other major high-speed axis out of Venice. Fashion and business capital rather than lagoon city, it’s an easy 2 to 3 night add-on for anyone who wants a genuinely different Italian register from the one they just left. Ljubljana: skip the train, take the bus
There’s no direct train to Ljubljana; the rail route needs a change at Villach, Austria, and runs a genuinely slow 6 hours 47 minutes door to door. The direct bus, several daily departures, roughly 3.5 hours from Piazzale Roma, is clearly the better option and the one worth booking. Book the Venice-Ljubljana bus on Omio . Slovenia’s capital is a different, Slavic and Alpine register from anything in Italy, and paired with Lake Bled it’s a common extension for travelers with an extra 2 to 3 days to spend.
Verdict: pick Florence or Milan for a fast, high-speed rail add-on, and Ljubljana for a genuinely different country entirely, but book the bus rather than the train for that last one.
