New Zealand’s activity list sorts more usefully by type than by trying to see everything in one region, since adrenaline, nature and culture each cluster in a different part of the country.
Thrill seekers
Queenstown is the base for AJ Hackett’s commercial bungy sites: Kawarau Bridge, the world’s first, at $265 NZD for a 43m jump, and the 134m Nevis Bungy at $330 NZD, reached by a 4WD shuttle to a highwire pod over the Nevis River. NZONE Skydive drops jumpers from 12,000-15,000 ft over Lake Wakatipu ($379-$479 NZD). For white water, the Kaituna River near Rotorua runs Grade 5 over the 7-meter Tutea Falls, the world’s highest commercially rafted waterfall ($125-$145 NZD); beginners go on the Grade 2-3 Kawarau River near Queenstown instead of the Grade 3-5 Shotover.
Nature and tramping
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a 19.4 km, 7-8 hour day walk across active volcanic craters between Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe, widely rated one of the best one-day hikes anywhere. The 10 DOC Great Walks, including the Milford and Routeburn Tracks in Fiordland, need hut bookings opened months ahead on doc.govt.nz ; international hut fees run $84-$152 NZD per night depending on the track. Abel Tasman National Park pairs a coastal walking track with water taxis between golden beaches.
Wildlife
Whale Watch Kaikoura tracks year-round resident sperm whales in the 1,000m-deep Kaikoura Canyon by hydrophone ($165 NZD adult, 80% refund if none are found). The Royal Albatross Centre at Taiaroa Head, Dunedin, is the world’s only mainland breeding colony of the northern royal albatross. Bottlenose dolphin swimming is banned in the Bay of Islands under a 2019 DOC rule to protect the population; viewing cruises there still run.
Water and surf
Raglan, Piha and Gisborne hold the country’s best-known surf breaks, though Piha and the other West Coast beaches carry serious rip currents and are only safe between the patrolled red and yellow flags. Culture
Te Puia in Rotorua pairs the Pōhutu Geyser with the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute’s live carving and weaving schools ($75 NZD adult, $190 NZD for the evening Te Pō hāngi). Waitangi Treaty Grounds in the Bay of Islands covers the founding document’s 1840 signing with daily cultural performances.
