Planning Several Days in Geneva
Geneva supports a few days on its own, but the real payoff of staying longer is pairing the city with one lake-region loop or a Chamonix overnight, not a fourth museum.
Two days in the city
Day one: the free stretch, Old Town, St. Pierre’s free nave (towers CHF 7, crypt CHF 8, combined CHF 12), Parc des Bastions and Bains des Pâquis (CHF 2 swim) toward evening. Day two: the CHF 25 Palais des Nations guided tour, booked ahead at ungeneva.org with a passport or ID card in hand, paired with the Red Cross Museum (CHF 15) and an afternoon in Carouge’s Italianate streets, a short tram ride south.
Add a lake loop
Lausanne is 36-45 minutes by direct SBB train for the Olympic Museum (CHF 20 adult) and a walk through the Lavaux UNESCO vineyard terraces; Montreux and Château de Chillon (CHF 15 adult) sit an hour east, also direct. Either makes a full third day, and there’s no need to do both back to back.
Add a Chamonix overnight
Skip trying to fit Chamonix into a returning day trip: the direct bus takes about 1h15 each way, but the train option runs 2.5-3 hours with two transfers, and the Aiguille du Midi cable car itself, dynamically priced at roughly €60-83 round trip, deserves unhurried time at altitude. Staying one night across the border turns a rushed excursion into an actual mountain day, though a physical passport or national ID card is still required at the border regardless of Schengen status.
CERN, on whichever day has a gap
Science Gateway entry is free; book a timed slot online up to a month out. The guided lab tours release on-site two hours before each start, so treat that specific tour as a bonus rather than something to build a day around.
Where to stay
