Small-group and private sailboats leave Marina da Glória for a three-hour afternoon cruise past the naval forts of Santa Cruz and São João, sliding beneath Sugarloaf as the sun drops behind Corcovado. Arpoador Rock, for free
At Posto 7, between Copacabana and Ipanema, the smooth granite of Arpoador fills with locals watching the sun set directly behind Morro Dois Irmãos, sometimes to applause. Dinner on the Santa Teresa hillside
Restaurant Aprazível, on Rua Aprazível, sets tables in a tropical garden across several open-air levels, with views over Guanabara Bay and mains running R$110-180; book two to three weeks ahead. Bar dos Descasados, inside the Hotel Santa Teresa MGallery, pours cocktails under the brick arches of an 1850s coffee-plantation mansion with the city lights spread out below.
Urca’s seawall
At the old Bar da Urca on Rua Cândido Gaffrée, order a cold beer and a plate of bolinhos de bacalhau, then cross the street and sit on the low stone seawall with your feet over the quiet water of Guanabara Bay, Christ the Redeemer watching over the anchored yachts. It is boteco pricing, R$15-20 a beer; arrive by 16:30 for wall space before the crowd builds.
