Rotterdam Day Trip Planner: Kinderdijk to Gouda
Five towns and sights can be reached from Rotterdam in under an hour, and the choice depends on what you want to see. Journey times are approximate. This planner puts them in order of effort.
Easiest: Delft, 15 minutes
Delft is about 15 minutes by train and works as a half day. Walk the Oude Delft canal and visit the Nieuwe Kerk, which holds the burial vault of the House of Orange. Vermeer was born here, and the Royal Delft factory has produced Delft Blue since 1653. Check each site for current prices.
A famous gallery: The Hague, 25 minutes
The Hague is about 25 minutes by train, and RET metro line E also reaches Den Haag Centraal. The Mauritshuis is the highlight, with the Girl with a Pearl Earring. Adults pay €20, under 19s enter free and Museumkaart holders go in free with a booked slot. Escher in Het Paleis at Lange Voorhout 74 is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00. The Binnenhof, home of Dutch politics, is a short walk from the museum. Info on the Mauritshuis is at mauritshuis.nl .
A food stop: Gouda, 20 minutes
Gouda is about 20 minutes by train. The cheese market runs on Thursday mornings, 10:00 to 12:30, between early April and late August in front of the Goudse Waag. There is no market on Ascension Day, and very hot weather can cancel it. Sint-Janskerk is known for its stained glass.
Windmills: Kinderdijk, half to full day
The 19 windmills of Kinderdijk have been a UNESCO site since 1997. A visitor ticket is €21 for adults and €9 for children aged 4 to 12, and it is 10 percent cheaper online. It covers the museum mills, the Wisboom Pumping Station, a boat tour, a bird theatre, a film and an exhibition. See kinderdijk.nl for hours, which change by season.
Ways to reach it:
- WaterShuttle from the Erasmusbrug, under 30 minutes. It is a separate ticket, not payable with OVpay, and in winter it runs Friday to Sunday only.
- Waterbus line 20 to Ridderkerk De Schans, then the Driehoeksveer ferry.
- Bus 489 from Kralingse Zoom, about 35 minutes and roughly twice an hour.
An old city on the water: Dordrecht
Dordrecht is reached by train or by Waterbus line 20, which stops at Dordrecht Merwekade. The Waterbus day ticket in 2026 costs €16.10 for adults and €5.20 for children aged 4 to 11, with under 4s free. It can be paid with OVpay, an OV-chipkaart or on board by card. The old town is known for its harbour and the Grote Kerk.
