Self-Guided Walking Tours of Chicago
Chicago’s grid makes route-planning simple, but the city is bigger than it looks on a map: the Loop is compact, while the outer neighborhoods that make good walking tours sit miles apart and need transit between them, not more walking.
Chicago Architecture Center walks
The CAC, headquartered at 111 E. Wacker Dr, charges $30 to $35 per person for guided Loop walks lasting 90 minutes to 2 hours. Burnham & Root’s 1888 Rookery Building, whose light court Frank Lloyd Wright remodeled in 1905, and Holabird & Roche’s 1895 Marquette Building both feature on the Historic Treasures route, while a separate Art Deco route covers the 1930 Chicago Board of Trade Building. The Chicago Cultural Center, free
The 1897 building at 78 E Washington St, once the city’s central library, offers free 45-minute architectural tours on select weekdays and weekends and is open daily 10am to 5pm. Preston Bradley Hall holds a 38-foot Tiffany glass dome made of roughly 30,000 individual pieces, fully restored in 2022, and it costs nothing to see.
The Loop Pedway
More than 50 buildings and CTA and Metra stations across 40 blocks link up through a 5-mile network of underground tunnels and skybridges, open on business days from 6am to 6pm. It is worth knowing about for a sub-zero January afternoon, when it lets you move between the Art Institute, Millennium Park, and several Loop towers without stepping outside.
Pilsen’s murals
The CTA Pink Line to 18th Street drops you at a stretch between Ashland and Halsted lined with hundreds of outdoor murals documenting Mexican-American labor history and community life, anchored by the National Museum of Mexican Art at 1852 W 19th St, open Tuesday through Sunday and always free. Wicker Park and Bucktown
The Blue Line to Damen reaches this district, centered on the six-corner intersection of Milwaukee, Damen, and North Avenues, where Beer Baron Row’s Victorian mansions on Hoyne and Pierce Avenues, built by 19th-century brewing families, sit near the Flat Iron Arts Building and a cluster of independent bookstores.
Lincoln Park
Admission to Lincoln Park Zoo costs nothing any day of the week, and Lake Shore Drive traces a walkable lakefront past the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool and the Lincoln Park Conservatory. Roughly 3 miles separate this district from the Loop, close enough to walk on a nice day or reach by a short bus or L ride.
What a walking tour cannot cover
A Loop walking tour does not extend 8 miles south to Hyde Park, so treat the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry as a separate transit trip rather than an extension of a downtown walk that starts at Millennium Park.
The verdict: string the Cultural Center and a CAC walk together since both start in the Loop, then treat Pilsen, Wicker Park, and Lincoln Park as separate half-days reached by transit.
