Sound of Music and Festival Hall Tours Salzburg
Which Salzburg tour fits you
Three organised experiences stand out in Salzburg: a coach tour of the locations used in The Sound of Music, a backstage visit to the festival theatres and a hop-on hop-off bus. Each suits a different kind of visit, and each has seasonal limits. Prices are 2026 figures; those described as “from” are the lowest listed.
Sound of Music coach tour
Operator: Panorama Tours, running since 1969. Length: about 4 hours. Departures: 9:15 and 14:00 daily from the Mirabellplatz terminal at Hubert-Sattler-Gasse 1. Price: from about EUR 70 on the operator’s site, and about EUR 75 through resellers. No child fare is confirmed, so ask when you book.
The route passes Mirabell Gardens, then gives a view across the lake to Schloss Leopoldskron, which is a private hotel and not open to casual visitors. It also stops at the Nonnberg Abbey viewpoint and the Hellbrunn gazebo before driving out through the lake district to Mondsee, where the church of St. Michael served as the wedding church. The gazebo was moved to Hellbrunn from Leopoldskron when crowds grew too large, and you can walk to it yourself in the park for free.
Festival theatre backstage tour
The festival ticket office at Hofstallgasse 1 sells tickets for a 50 minute walk through three venues: the Grosses Festspielhaus, the House for Mozart and the Felsenreitschule, a former riding school carved from the Mönchsberg rock, where the Trapp family sang in the film. Tickets cost about EUR 10 for adults and EUR 5 for students and children. A daily slot around 14:00 is usual, but festival rehearsals can remove it.
Hop-on hop-off bus
Salzburg Sightseeing Tours operates a single route from Mirabellplatz. It stops near the Mozarteum, Hanuschplatz, Schloss Leopoldskron, Hellbrunn and the airport. Commentary comes in 13 languages, with film commentary included. The 2026 season ran from 27 March to 4 October.
| Ticket | Adult | Child |
|---|---|---|
| 24 hours | EUR 30 | EUR 17 |
| 48 hours | EUR 33 | EUR 21 |
| 72 hours | EUR 41 | EUR 25 |
The Salzburg Card gives a 20 percent discount on this bus at the Mirabellplatz kiosk. The bus is off the road for winter.
Booking advice
- Book the coach tour a day or two ahead in summer.
- Use the bus for orientation on a first day, then switch to walking.
- If rain is forecast, the backstage tour is the best indoor choice.
