Sri Lanka Wildlife and Outdoor Activities
Dawn in a safari jeep, an elephant at the water’s edge and mist lifting off the Horton Plains: Sri Lanka’s best outdoor days are wildlife and walking days, and they depend on park rules as much as on weather.
Safari parks
Udawalawe is the dependable choice, with elephants visible through the year and flat tracks that suit first-time visitors. Minneriya and Kaudulla hold the famous elephant gathering, strongest from August to October, when herds of up to about 300 come to the drying reservoir to graze and bathe. Yala is the park for leopards, but Blocks 1 and 2 shut during dry spells, so check the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) before you pay for a trip. DWC fees are per person in US dollars, plus a service charge, VAT and the cost of the jeep, so no single price applies. As a guide, a half-day Minneriya jeep with a ranger is roughly LKR 16,000 to 30,000 per vehicle. Search safari jeeps on GetYourGuide to compare departure times.
Stay on the authorised tracks, keep jeeps well back from elephants, and never feed wildlife.
Choosing an elephant experience
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage still operates, with bathing at 10:00 and 14:00, but it has drawn heavy criticism over captive breeding, chaining and commercial bathing shows. The Elephant Transit Home at Udawalawe is run by the DWC with Born Free support since 2002. Orphaned calves are fed and then released, and visitors watch from a platform. Read Born Free’s account of the project .
Sea and mountain
- Whales: Mirissa trips run November to April, with the peak from December to March. Choose a licensed boat that does not chase.
- Snorkelling: Pigeon Island National Park off Trincomalee offers shallow coral, blacktip reef sharks and turtles in calm water from May to September.
- Horton Plains: the 9.5 km loop to World’s End and Baker’s Falls opens at 06:00. Arrive early, as cloud usually covers the cliff edge by about 09:30.
- Rafting: Kitulgala has Grade II and III rapids.
The monsoon calendar
The southwest monsoon (May to September) brings heavy sea and rain to the south and west. The northeast monsoon (October to January) brings rain to the north, east and Cultural Triangle. Opposite coasts are best at opposite times, so match the activity to the side of the island.
Ticketed attractions follow different rules; see the attraction tours page for those.
Verdict: base yourself near Udawalawe for a two-night wildlife stop at any time of year, and add Minneriya only if you travel between August and October.
