Sydney Sightseeing: Free, Paid and In Between
Most of what makes Sydney’s skyline recognisable costs nothing to look at. The trick is knowing exactly where “free” stops and a ticket starts, because the two sit right next to each other more than once.
The Opera House, from the outside
The forecourt, the steps and the exterior sail-shapes are open to walk into any time, no ticket required, and that’s plenty for a photo stop. Getting inside the auditoria is a different matter: it takes either the one-hour guided tour or a ticket to an actual performance, and there’s no casual wander past that point.
The Harbour Bridge has three separate price points
Three separate products sit on the same bridge and they are easy to mix up. Walking or cycling across the bridge on its dedicated pedestrian and cycle path is completely free, no booking, no ticket. The Sydney Harbour BridgeMuseum, renamed from the old Pylon Lookout and reopened in May 2026, is a separate paid option: around $35 adult for 200 steps up to an 87m viewing platform inside the pylon. BridgeClimb, the full ascent to the top of the arch, is a different product again, priced in the low $200s and up. Walking across costs nothing; climbing to the top is the paid, several-hundred-dollar version, and the two are worth keeping separate when you’re planning the day.
Royal Botanic Garden and Mrs Macquarie’s Chair
Free, open every day of the year, and the harbour views from Mrs Macquarie’s Chair rival anything you’d pay to see elsewhere in the city.
The Rocks
Free to wander, with cobbled lanes, colonial-era buildings, and a weekend market that adds a browsing reason to linger longer than a quick walk-through.
Darling Harbour’s promenade
The waterfront itself costs nothing to stroll; the paid attractions clustered around it, SEA LIFE, WILD LIFE Sydney and Madame Tussauds among them, are a separate booking covered in this site’s family-friendly guide rather than repeated here.
