Check parking costs and availability before you book, not after, especially if you’re renting a car for several consecutive days to cover the Great Ocean Road, Yarra Valley or Phillip Island back to back. Some CBD hotels charge separately for parking, and it can add up over a multi-day rental.
If you’re using trains instead of a car
Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong all work by V/Line train from Southern Cross Station, and the Dandenongs (Puffing Billy) work by Metro to Belgrave from anywhere in the Free Tram Zone. If you’re planning to skip a rental car entirely and lean on trains for your day trips, staying anywhere inside or near the Free Tram Zone keeps every one of those connections an easy walk or a short, free tram ride away.
