Top Odense Sights and Museums

Odense, the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, keeps its main sights in a compact, walkable old town on the island of Funen. That makes it an easy place to see a lot on foot in a day or two. Entry prices are in Danish kroner (DKK), not euro.

Hans Christian Andersen

H.C. Andersens Hus is the headline sight: a largely underground museum by the architect Kengo Kuma, opened in 2021 on Andersen’s birthplace and built around a “Fairytale Garden” of green mounds and winding paths. Adult entry is around 165 DKK (verify); under-18s go free but still need a booked ticket, and reserving ahead is strongly advised. The same ticket includes same-day entry to the small yellow Childhood Home on Munkemollestraede.

The cathedral and old town

Odense Cathedral (Skt. Knuds Kirke, St. Canute’s) is the Gothic church at the heart of the old town and a stop on the Andersen walking route. Around it lie the cobbled Latin Quarter and the pedestrian shopping streets, easy to wander between museums. TID, the city museum once known as Montergarden, sits among 16th-century-onward courtyards.

Brandts art museum

Kunstmuseum Brandts is Funen’s largest art museum, housed in a converted 1869 textile factory in the Latin Quarter, with more than 8,000 square metres of galleries, a cafe and an art bookshop. Its permanent display, “The Works,” spans 250 years of art from Funen (verify current prices).

Parks and the river

The Fairytale Garden (Eventyrhaven) and Munke Mose park follow the Odense River as free, central green space, ideal for a break between sights. From Munke Mose the Odense Aafart river cruise, running since 1882, carries you out to the zoo and the Fruens Boge forest; an adult return is about 125 DKK (verify).

A little beyond

Den Fynske Landsby, the Funen Village, is an open-air museum in the Fruens Boge woods with 25 historic buildings, part of Museum Odense. For the city’s other famous son, the composer Carl Nielsen, there is the Carl Nielsen Museum by the Concert Hall. Odense is flat and pedestrian-friendly, so on foot or by rental bike is the best way to link it all.
