Tunisia Day Trips from Three Home Bases
Advice, dated 31 October 2026. Look up the latest US State Department and UK FCDO advice before you book, because some border and military zones are closed to tourists. The US rates Tunisia Level 2 overall. The FCDO’s 24 July 2026 update tells visitors to avoid Chaambi, the Libyan border belt and Kasserine Governorate. None of the outings below enters those zones.
The rule of thumb
A day trip should leave you home by evening. From Tunis that means the north-east, north and south-west within about two hours. From Sousse it means the Sahel and Kairouan. From Tozeur it means the oases and the dunes. Tunis to Tozeur is roughly 450 km, six to seven hours each way, and Tunis to Djerba is over 500 km, so neither works as a day out from the capital.
Home base: Tunis
- Carthage and Sidi Bou Said (half day). Ride the TGM from Tunis Marine. Spend about two hours among the Antonine Baths and Byrsa Hill, then finish on the cliffs at Sidi Bou Said. The Bardo is in Le Bardo, to the west, and the Tunis Metro line 4 stops there. It does not open on Mondays.
- Dougga and Testour (full day). About 105 km by road, one and a half to two hours each way. Testour was settled by refugees from Andalusia and has a mosque clock whose hands run backwards. Plan about three hours among the ruins.
- Bizerte and Ichkeul (full day). Bizerte lies roughly 65 km north via the A4. The old harbour, the Ottoman kasbah and the medina fill the morning. Ichkeul National Park, 25 km to the south-west, is for the afternoon, and best between November and February.
- Cap Bon (full day). The loop passes Nabeul, famed for ceramics and a Friday market, Kelibia and its hilltop fortress, and the Punic ruins of Kerkouane, which are on the UNESCO list. El Haouaria has old quarries on the coast.
Home base: Sousse or Monastir
- El Jem (half day). 65 km south of Sousse by train or louage. About two hours in the amphitheatre, then the mosaic museum. The main-line SNCFT timetable for 1 September 2026 to 30 June 2027 is on sncft.com.tn.
- Kairouan (half day). Louage service runs from Sousse, about 60 km. See the Great Mosque courtyard, the Aghlabid Basins and the carpet workshops.
- Mahdia (half day). The Sahel Metro serves Mahdia from Sousse, about 45 km. The Borj El Kebir fort, the Skifa Kahla gate and the cemetery overlooking the sea are the highlights.
Home base: Tozeur
- Chott el Djerid to Douz (full day). The P16 causeway crosses the salt pan for about 125 km to Douz. Do not walk out on the crust. Save the afternoon for camel riding at the dunes with a licensed operator.
- Mountain oases (half to full day). Chebika, Tamerza and Mides call for a 4WD and a driver. Mides sits on the Algerian border, and Tamerza is close by, so read the live FCDO map first and book only a licensed Tozeur operator.
Tips that save time
Pay in dinars and keep your exchange slips. Louage fares are set but not published, so ask at the station. Start early, because the Kairouan mosque courtyard closes around early afternoon.
