A Few Days Based in Utrecht
One hotel in Utrecht is enough for a week of travel in central Holland. Utrecht Centraal is the busiest station in the country, with more than 200,000 passengers a day, and fast trains reach Amsterdam in 27 minutes, The Hague in 37, Rotterdam in 38, Den Bosch in 28 and Schiphol Airport in 30. Staying put also avoids packing and moving every day. Prices below are in euros.
How the trips work
Public transport is paid by touching a contactless bank card or a phone to the reader when you enter and leave, so you need no paper ticket or special pass. Museums charge separately, or you can use the Dutch Museumkaart if you plan on four or five visits. Some venues, including the Rietveld Schröder House, the Nijntje Museum and the Spoorwegmuseum, still require a reserved slot for cardholders.
Two days in the city and at a castle
First day. Join the 10:00 Dom Tower tour, then see the Domkerk and the Pandhof. Eat in a wharf cafe, spend the afternoon at the Centraal Museum, and book a Rietveld Schröder House slot well ahead. Dinner can be at Stadskasteel Oudaen on the Oudegracht.
Second day. In the morning, visit the Spoorwegmuseum. Afterwards go by train to Vleuten and on to Kasteel de Haar by local bus or bicycle. Plan the last stretch with 9292.nl, because the castle’s own site points visitors there. Castle and gardens cost 21.50 euros, and castle slots can sell out.
A day by bike along the Vecht
Hire a bicycle in the city for about 12 to 15 euros per 24 hours, or 25 to 30 euros for an e-bike, and carry photo ID for the deposit. Ride north along the river through Oud-Zuilen, home of the 18th-century Slot Zuylen and of the writer Belle van Zuylen. Continue through Maarssen to Breukelen, whose name was carried across the Atlantic to become Brooklyn. Many of the riverside houses are summer residences built by rich Amsterdam families.
Extra days to add
- Amersfoort: about 15 minutes by train. Its Koppelpoort gate dates from 1425, and the Mondriaanhuis marks the painter’s birthplace.
- Oudewater and Gouda: take a regional bus to the Heksenwaag, the Witches’ Weighhouse, then go on by bus or bicycle to Gouda for the town hall, the windows of St. John’s church and the cheese market.
- Soesterberg: the Nationaal Militair Museum with tanks and aircraft, 15 km east of the city.
- Amsterdam or The Hague: both are day-sized. In The Hague you can see the Mauritshuis, the Peace Palace and the beach at Scheveningen. Return to Utrecht at night, where rooms usually cost less than in Amsterdam.
What does not fit
Zeeland’s coast, including Domburg and Vlissingen, is 2.5 to 3 hours away each way. Hoge Veluwe National Park lies in Gelderland, about 60 km east, and is much easier by car.
Where to sleep
