Walking Routes Near Stepantsminda Town
Advisory as of October 2026: The UK Foreign Office (FCDO ) warns against all travel to Russian-occupied South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and against all but essential travel close to their administrative boundary lines. For Georgia overall the US State Department gives Level 1, and for the two occupied regions Level 4 (Do Not Travel). Truso Valley runs near South Ossetia: keep to the marked track, bring your passport and do not head toward the boundary. Mountain rescue in Georgia can be slow, so book a guide for any glacier or summit route.
The town is small, and walking here mostly means taking a mountain trail from the edge of it. This page covers four walks, from the long classic to the very short. Bring cash in Georgian lari (GEL) for taxis, Delicas and snacks.
Walk 1: Gergeti Trinity Church, 6 to 7 km return
The trail begins in Gergeti village, over the bridge on the west bank of the Tergi river. Expect 450 to 520 m of climbing to the church at 2,170 m, 1 to 1.5 hours going up, and 3 to 4 hours for the full outing. Two paths lead up: a direct, rocky one through a ravine and a gentler, winding one through pine forest. Beside the trail in the village stands a preserved Mokhevian tower.
Snow and ice make the way slippery from November to February. The church is free to enter and has dress rules: shoulders and knees covered, women with covered hair and a long skirt, men without hats and in long trousers. Aprons, scarves and wraps are available at the door. Do not take photos or video inside, and leave the drone at home.
Walk 2: the town centre and the Kazbegi Museum
A short loop from the main square passes bakeries and bank ATMs, then reaches the museum at Kazbegi Street 2, the former house of the writer Alexander Kazbegi. Published hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:30, and a ticket is 5 GEL; the museum has also been reported temporarily closed, so check before you go.
Walk 3: the Gveleti falls trail
Drive or taxi about 7 km north to the trailhead. The path forks at a rocky junction. A 10 to 15 minute walk takes you to the small fall, and the 30 m big fall is 15 to 45 minutes away, depending on where you begin. The final stretch is a scramble over rocky steps, so wear boots. Allow 1.5 to 3 hours.
Walk 4: the Sno road and the stone heads
In the Sno valley, stone heads carved by the sculptor Merab Piranishvili line the roadside. A taxi or Delica gets you there, and then you can wander along the road. Ask the driver how far Sno is from town.
Longer walks
- Truso Valley: a mostly flat track of 18 to 22 km return to Zakagori Fortress. Border guards are stationed there, so take a passport and stay on the track. Never approach the boundary line.
- Chaukhi Lake from Juta: about 13 km return from the roadblock. The last 2.6 km of road into Juta is reported closed after a collapse in June 2025.
