Tunnel, Castle and House Tours in Gjirokaster
Gjirokaster’s attractions are small, and most of them come with a guide who works at the site or belongs to the family that owns it. Cold War Tunnel
Dug in the early 1970s, this shelter has about 800 m of corridor and 59 rooms. It is a museum about the communist period, so a quiet, serious tone suits it. The entrance is by the Municipality building near Çerçiz Topulli Square on Rruga Gjin Zenebisi. Ask for help at the Tourist Information office on the square if you cannot find it. From April to October it opens 09:00 to 18:00, and from November to March it opens 08:00 to 14:00. Read the official tunnel page for any changes.
The family-run house tour
At Skënduli House, built in 1823, family members lead the visit. There are no fixed hours, so ask at the door, and Lonely Planet says a pre-booked visit is the way in between November and March. Bring cash for the entry fee.
Zekate House
Beqir Zeko had this house built in 1811 to 1812. The official page says it is open daily from 08:00 until late in the evening. With no electric light inside, the rooms are best seen before about 16:00.
Castle with a licensed guide
You can add a licensed guide at the castle, and the fee is something to agree beforehand. The gate ticket is about 400 ALL, and winter hours are shorter, with a possible Monday closure. Plan on 1.5 to 2 hours on steep, uneven stone. The castle includes a former prison from the 20th century, including the communist period, which deserves a serious pace.
Dropull and Drino valley tours
Local operators run tours through the Dropull and Drino valleys. Ask what the route covers, how long you will spend driving and whether entry fees are included. Prices vary by operator, so compare two or three.
