Kazbek Climbs and Multi Day Treks
Advisory as of October 2026: The UK Foreign Office (FCDO ) warns against all travel to Russian-occupied South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and against all but essential travel close to their administrative boundary lines. For Georgia overall the US State Department gives Level 1, and for the two occupied regions Level 4 (Do Not Travel). Truso Valley runs near South Ossetia: keep to the marked track, bring your passport and do not head toward the boundary. Mountain rescue in Georgia can be slow, so book a guide for any glacier or summit route.
Stepantsminda is where Georgia’s biggest mountain trips begin. The high routes are a summer affair, running roughly from late June to September. Four trips are described here, from hardest to easiest. Local costs are in Georgian lari (GEL), and guesthouses and drivers want cash.
1. Mount Kazbek summit, 5,054 m
Kazbek (Mkinvartsveri in Georgian) is a glaciated peak and a serious mountaineering objective. It is not a long hike, and it is not suited to a casual trip. Guided programmes take 3 to 4 days plus one reserve day for weather, and some operators allow 7 to 8 days.
The route in outline:
- Walk or ride from Stepantsminda to Gergeti church, then continue to Altihut.
- Reach the Bethlemi Hut, a former meteorological station at roughly 3,650 m.
- Spend a day acclimatising toward 4,000 m.
- Start the summit push around midnight. It takes about 10 to 14 hours and climbs roughly 1,400 m.
The glacier needs crampons, an ice axe, a harness, a rope and a helmet. Hire a certified guide. Never walk onto bare ice without one. Rescue in the mountains can be slow.
2. Juta to Roshka over the Chaukhi Pass
A two day summer trek leads from Juta (about 2,200 m) below the jagged Chaukhi Massif (about 3,842 m) across the Chaukhi Pass and past the Abudelauri lakes to Roshka. It cannot be done as a day trip. Juta’s access road collapsed in June 2025 and the last 2.6 km, about 40 minutes on foot, is reported closed to vehicles. Glacial water means no swimming.
3. Gergeti to Altihut and the glacier snout
From the church at 2,170 m the path rises toward Altihut, a lodge at about 3,014 m near the Gergeti glacier. Hikers can make it a long day out or sleep at the lodge. Ask in town whether the lodge is open and taking guests before you rely on it for a bed. Do not step onto the glacier ice.
4. Truso Valley with a tent
The flat Truso track runs to Zakagori Fortress, about 18 to 22 km return. A seasonal cafe in the valley is where some summer walkers camp; ask an operator in town for the current arrangement. Border guards are posted at the fortress, so carry your passport. Moving on toward the villages above Zakagori or toward Kelitsadi Lake may need a free border-zone permit, and the operator or border police can say. Never approach the boundary line.
Getting to the trailheads
The town is 155 to 157 km from Tbilisi. Didube marshrutkas cost about 15 GEL and take 3 to 3.5 hours. In winter the Jvari Pass (2,379 m) can close in snow, mostly December to March, so check the road on the day.
