Tourist Route or Miners' Route at Wieliczka
Choosing between the two guided routes at the Wieliczka Salt Mine is mostly a question of who is travelling and what they want to see. This page starts with who each route suits, then describes what happens on each tour and ends with a checklist for the day.
Who should pick which route
Choose the Tourist Route if you want the carved chapels, brine lakes and museum exhibits, you are travelling with young children, or you need a language other than English or Polish. It has no minimum age and offers eight languages.
Choose the Miners’ Route if you are 10 or older, want a working-mine experience in a small group, and are happy with Polish or English. It skips the Chapel of St Kinga, so visitors who want that chapel need the Tourist Route.
Visitors with limited mobility should contact the mine before booking. The Tourist Route has about 800 steps and is not step-free, so ask the mine about arrangements for wheelchair users before you book.
What the Tourist Route tour includes
The guide leads a group of up to 40 from the Daniłowicz Shaft down a long wooden staircase of about 380 steps to Level I, then through more than 20 historic chambers. Stops include St Anthony’s Chapel, dating from 1698, the Janowice Chamber with the legend of Princess Kinga, the Spalone Chamber, which shows how miners once burned off methane, and the Chapel of St Kinga at about 101 m. The route also passes two underground brine lakes, in the Erazm Barącz and Weimar chambers. It reaches the Kraków Saltworks Museum exhibition at 135 m, where a lift takes visitors to the surface. In total you walk about 3.5 km over 2 to 3 hours in air of 17 to 18°C.
What the Miners’ Route tour includes
The route begins at the Regis Shaft on plac Kościuszki 9 and covers about 1.9 km down to 101 m. A foreman leads groups of no more than 20, and visitors take the part of novice miners. Tasks include measuring methane with a detector, crushing and moving lumps of salt and reading mining maps. A lamp, a helmet and a carbon-monoxide absorber are supplied after a short briefing. The air is 14 to 16°C. Tickets for this route sell at the box office only when online slots remain, so book ahead.
Children’s tour and Graduation Tower
Families with children from 5 to 12 can choose Śladami Legend, which includes a meeting with the Skarbnik, a legendary mine spirit, from about 105 PLN per person. The Graduation Tower in St Kinga Park is an unguided walk-round attraction that costs 10 PLN and takes about 30 minutes.

- Buy tickets only from the mine’s own channels, bilety.kopalnia.pl or its ticket offices, since the mine says it works with no intermediaries.
