Top Activities in San Salvador
This page arranges San Salvador’s best activities by time of day, so you can build a day around the city’s cooler hours. Prices are in US dollars, the national currency, and a few businesses accept bitcoin. The state of exception declared in 2022 remains in force. Carry a copy of your passport photo page and expect police to ask for ID. The FCDO safety advice covers the rest, including petty crime and the risk of unofficial taxis.
Morning: El Boquerón
The national park around the volcano crater opens at 08:00 and closes at 17:00 every day. Foreigners pay $2 and Salvadorans $1, and parking is about $1. The rim stands at 1,893 m, so mornings are cool and the views of the city are clear. A trail circles the rim and another goes down into the crater. Bring water and a layer for the wind.
Midday: the Centro Histórico
The old centre holds the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Palacio Nacional and the 1917 Teatro Nacional. The Palacio Nacional runs guided visits Tuesday to Sunday for $5 for non-resident foreigners, and the schedule is set by the Ministry of Culture. BINAES, the national library, is open at every hour and is free. Its seventh-floor terrace has a restaurant and a gallery and works well for lunch. The elsalvador.com library report explains what is inside.
Afternoon: Puerta del Diablo
Rock viewpoints near Panchimalco, about 15 km south of the centre, make a good afternoon outing. The park keeps listed hours until 22:00, but the summits close at about 17:00. A small fee applies. Glass-floor viewing platforms are reported, and rappelling and ziplines are sold at extra cost. Check the park page before you leave.
Evening: BINAES, the plazas and dinner
Because BINAES never closes, it suits an evening visit. The plazas of the old centre are pleasant at dusk. For dinner, hillside restaurants line Calle al Volcán on the road toward El Boquerón. Confirm that a restaurant is open before you go.
Lake Ilopango
A boat ride on Lake Ilopango, about 16 km east, is the most relaxed way to spend a free half day. Rides cost about $15 per half hour in 2023. Because a tourist boat capsized there in 2022, choose a licensed operator and use a life jacket. Do not plan to swim.
Beyond the city
Joya de Cerén and the Maya sites open Tuesday to Sunday. The Pacific coast at El Tunco is 35 to 45 km away, and its rip currents are strong, so non-surfers should stay out of the sea. See the day trips page for details.
Quick safety list
- Take official taxis or ride-hailing, not public buses.
- Climb volcanoes in daylight and with a guide.
- Avoid remote trails alone.
- Expect small earthquakes, and allow for rainy-season floods from June to November.
