Lakeside and Forest Walking in St. Moritz
Walking in St. Moritz is free and needs no booking. The routes below are public paths that you can follow on your own, and lifts put more of them within reach. Costs in this guide are in Swiss francs (CHF).
Route 1: around Lake St. Moritz
The lakeside path circles the whole lake. Plan about an hour. It is free. In winter, the frozen surface is used for events, so only walk where the route is marked and obey any closures.
Route 2: forest path to Lej da Staz
A forest walk leads out to Lej da Staz, a small lake. Route length depends on where you join the path, so look at a map before you start. Good shoes help on forest ground.
Route 3: Muottas Muragl
The funicular from the valley costs CHF 42.50 return in 2026 and lifts you to 2,456 m. In summer you can walk panoramic paths from the top. In winter marked winter hiking paths are listed by Engadin St. Moritz Mountains, and the details are on mountains.ch . The funicular keeps running until 23:00 in season, so you can stay for the evening light and ride down afterwards.
Route 4: Morteratsch glacier trail
Ride the train to Morteratsch and follow the trail toward the ice. It is free. Budget about 6 km for the return walk. Warning ropes mark the edge, and the ice cave is not safe to enter.
Using the lifts to start higher
| Lift | Summer return for an adult |
|---|---|
| Corvatsch | CHF 64 |
| Diavolezza | CHF 46 |
| Surlej to Murtel | CHF 46 |
| Furtschellas | CHF 39 |
The fare page for walkers lists the details. The Diavolezza cable car runs daily until 15 November 2026 and then rests until winter.
Rules and safety
- Stay on marked paths near the lake in winter and on the glacier trail at all times.
- Check whiterisk.ch for the avalanche bulletin before leaving prepared ground in snow season.
- Hire a certified mountain guide for off-route or glacier terrain.
- The free routes need no booking.
Linking a walk with a museum
A morning on the lake path pairs well with the Segantini Museum, which reopens on 10 December 2026 and is closed on Mondays. The Museum Engiadinais in St. Moritz Bad reopens on 6 December 2026. Both close for part of the autumn, so confirm hours.
