Self-Guided Walks Around St Helier
Walkers in St Helier can combine a town loop that takes about two hours with longer coastal routes reached by LibertyBus. The bus network starts at Liberation Station on the Esplanade, and libertybus.je gives fares and times. The sea decides which shore walks are possible, because spring tides here rise and fall by over 10 m.
Town loop
Start at Liberation Square, where Philip Jackson’s sculpture marks the freeing of the island on 9 May 1945. Walk to the Weighbridge, where the Pomme d’Or Hotel’s balcony saw the Union Jack raised on Liberation Day, and where the Ariadne steam clock stands, a replica installed in 1997. Next comes Royal Square, with its George II statue and the musket-ball scars of 1781 on The Peirson pub. St Helier Parish Church, founded in the 11th century, is a short walk away. Continue through King Street and Charing Cross, a pedestrian street of Victorian shopfronts, and end at the Central Market, whose Victorian fountain is a good place to stop. The market closes on Sundays.
Railway Walk
The former Jersey Railway ran from 1870 to 1936, and its trackbed from St Aubin to La Corbiere is now a traffic-free path of crushed stone. One way is about 4 miles (6.5 km), or about 2 hours on foot. LibertyBus routes 12 and 15 reach St Aubin Pier from town in roughly 15 minutes, and route 12A runs back from Corbiere. You pass wooded valleys, pines and open heath before reaching the headland.
At La Corbiere, the lighthouse is joined to land by a causeway of about 300 m. A siren sounds before the tide covers it. If you hear it, walk back to shore immediately.
North coast
Between Bonne Nuit Bay and Devil’s Hole or Greve de Lecq, the path hugs cliffs 200 to 300 feet high, through gorse and heather. Expect steep steps and slopes, and wear shoes with good grip. Part of this coast belongs to the National Trust for Jersey . Look up the bus to the trailhead on libertybus.je.
Elizabeth Castle causeway
You can walk the paved causeway, about 1.1 km, from Westpark Slip, but only at low tide. Allow at least 15 minutes each way. The Ports of Jersey calculator at ports.je shows when it is open, and the ferry kiosk answers questions on 01534 634048. Never set out once water has started to cover the stones. Anyone stranded can call 999 and ask for the Coastguard, or take the castle ferry back.
